Modern war is mainly determined by supply, whoever has the most of it wins. This also includes manpower. Germany is smaller than Texas, its production output was staggeringly low compared to the United States and USSR. The USSR was also capable of fielding millions more soldiers than Germany was. Germany also had a severe oil shortage that the USA and USSR did not have. This is actually the main reason why Germany invaded the USSR when they did, because it was nearest source of oil (Nazi ideology was second). The second main reason is the USSR's geography. Russia is massive, cold, and the USSR could put a soldier behind every rock and tree. Even if Germany took Moscow, Leningrad, and Stalingrad they still would have lost because the Soviets knew they were fighting a war of extermination and would have fought to the very last man.
