The reason why Yugoslavia fell apart is rather intuitive (the richer states saw the poor ones as an economic burden and wanted to integrate themselves into the Western Euro sphere). The reason why outsiders are so perplexed by this is because Balkan nationalist talking points are so low IQ. You'll have Croats saying they're Mitteleuropa because Austrians built some fancy buildings in Zagreb 150 years ago and you'll have Serbs saying they're tuff because they rebelled against Ottomans that one time while Croats were under Austrian rule and this makes Croats le bad o algo

as for nationalism, it is actually a very complex idea with multifarious applications. it has been used to unite and liberate ethnic groups, justify or oppose empires, and promote the class interests of workers, bourgeoisie or the military class. nationalism isn't the same thing as grug-brained loyalism to the state, in fact it is often, perhaps usually, opposed to it. the german liberals first attempted to use nationalism in order to dismantle the complex aristocratic dominate state system of the holy roman empire.
your reading of the warring states period is similarly juvenile. it was not a nationalist or even a national conflict, it was a conflict between different ruling classes attempting to establish themselves as overlords of all china. it's the same for the modern chinese civil war, the warlords were not leading nations against each other, they were trying to make their states the one true state for the whole nation.

A state cannot serve all interests equally. And the more and stronger the competing interests are, the greater the imcentive for people to split off their states that will better serve their own. And those competing interests don't just go away, so the resultant multiple states will also compete against one another. All of this is entirely natural and unavoidable.

I don’t feel you can use Chinese history as an example and then create a fictitious summary of what I presume to be your view of the Spring and Autumn or Warring states period since that is legitimately ancient history, the differences between states culturally was much larger, their dialects would seem different, their writings, measurements, currency, etc. But it seems little different now as we’re pronouncing their characters using Mandarin.
