We're now on the 31st day of my daily presidents threads celebrating the 250th anniversary of the USA.
Today we have Herbert Hoover (1/30/1882 - 4/12/1945), who served as president from 1933 to his death in 1945 of an intracerebral hemorrhage. He is the only, and will remain the only, president elected four times. He is also the only president to use a wheelchair due to the effects of Polio on him as a child. Prior to being president, he was a senator from and governor of New York, and the assistant secretary of the navy.
Notable actions or events during his presidency include his highly productive First 100 Days, the New Deal, the Glass-Steagall Act, the WPA, Social Security, the SEC, his Fireside Chats over the radio, the Judicial Procedures Reform Bill of 1937, the National Recovery Act, the 1937 Recession, the March of Dimes, the Atlantic Charter, Pearl Harbor and World War II, the Japanese Americans Internment, the Second Bill of Rights, the G.I. Bill, and the Yalta Conference. I know I'm missing a fair bit but christ this guy did a lot of things.

What do you think of the guy who served hot dogs to the English monarchy?

I wanted to point out that there had been states with elder pension programs, but they tended to be tied to political machines so if you voted the wrong way, your pension check magically stopped coming in the mail. So FDR just decided to nationalize the whole thing instead.

It's always funny when pig-shit retarded Americans think FDR was a communist....

He saved American capitalism, and made it to secure and stable, that the American communist movement basically vanished towards the end of his Presidency

He forced like half of the world to be financially dependent on American companies. The European imperial capitalist system of the 1800s was replaced the modern American capitalist system we know today.

If anything American capitalists should be worshiping this guy at his feet

Measurements of his blood pressure taken by Dr. Bruin (his personal physician) show a slow rise over his presidency, but still in tolerable limits. The terminal spike was mostly in his last few months.

>>18538644
They had none of the treatments used for high blood pressure today.

all in all, if you looked at his doctor's measurements of his blood pressure over the years it's amazing he lasted as long as he did because he approached dangerous levels by summer 1944. his vascular system must have been really strong to hold out that long.

FDR's doctors assured the public during the '32 election that he was in excellent health and his polio had no adverse effects on him. Throughout his first two terms he was pretty healthy overall and had few medical issues outside sinus conditions, and he swam regularly until 1941. Admire McIntire became his official doctor as he was a specialist in ear, nose, and throat conditions. Also although air conditioning was available by that point, the White House was not equipped with it as cold, dry air would aggravate the president's sinuses.

There are only intermittent records of his blood pressure over his first two terms, his official medical records "disappeared" after his death, probably at McIntire's hands, and it's not clear how often it was measured. Overall, his blood pressure was still not excessively bad through 1941. If FDR were alive today his doctors would tell him to stop smoking and change up his diet.
>>
Cont.

Unfortunately, there was very little to treat high blood pressure back then beyond a vague idea about exercise that doctors didn't press too hard about because they assumed blood pressure rising with age was normal. During the war, FDR stopped swimming, doubled his smoking regimen, and often worked 16 hour days with very little sleep. His blood pressure records 1941 until Bruenn becomes his physician in '44 are unknown, either because McIntire destroyed them or they just didn't take any measurements. Still, they show his condition was becoming dangerous. Bruenn tried to get him to resuming swimming but it shot his numbers up so badly that he immediately discontinued the effort.

Also FDR really preferred not to know his exact condition, he sometimes gave Bruenn evasive or incomplete answers to questions and telling Daisy Suckley that he wasn't especially interested in finding out the details about his health. Even if he didn't stroke out he probably would have succumbed to kidney failure in a few years.
>>
>>18538688
Adding to all of the comments here, we have to keep in mind that FDR was not able to exercise and "move" the way non-paralyzed people can. By 1935 every muscle from his butt down had atrophied to the point of almost nonexistence.

This lack of natural exercise is going to cause all sorts of health issues. For example, paraplegics often experienced renal deterioration, which can lead to them looking very sickly.

The fact that he lived until age 62 is actually pretty remarkable.

fdrs questionable foreign policy towards the end of the war make a lot more sense when you realize he was in actuality a dark wizard hiding his true occult power under the veil of superficial charm and a disarming crippled facade.
he intentionally engineered the second world war to plant the seeds for the next great "final" global conflict from which america would emerge the undisputed ultimate global superpower annihilating all foreign opposition (namely the soviet union) through its unchecked atomic supremacy. the years of constant global conflict would excuse his accruement of unimaginable despotic power all the while eroding the will and values of the american people to a point in which no one would dare lift a finger against him once he decided to finally crown himself ruler of the first global empire.
we fortunately live in the timeline where he died of a stroke a year before his evil plans could come to fruition

Eisenhower also had lifelong blood pressure issues; after his death doctors found that he had an adrenal gland disorder causing him to overproduce certain stimulants.

those numbers are frightening actually, especially in his last months, but Eleanor wouldn't allow him to be autopsied so it's not known exactly what medical conditions he could have had

as a German anon, i can say we would have had a better peace settlement to the war than we got OTL had Roosevelt lived. The court packing plan and going past Washington's two term guideline were inexcusable.
>>
>>18538968
There was never a guideline and Washington had to be cajoled into even running a second time. Grant, Truman and TR all tried for third terms too. I kind of wish they'd have codified the one seven year term that they were debating in 1787 though.
>>
>>18539012
Grant sought the nomination but was denied. TR and Truman both inherited the presidency and had only been elected once. Under the terms of the 22nd amendment (ignoring the grandfather clause) TR would still have been eligible to run for president. FDR's decision to keep running despite his poor health and the break with tradition inspired a quick amendment to stop that from happening again.

Two 4 year terms is superior to one 7 year term since it requires winning another election. 7 years is a very long time in politics, especially before the 25th amendment.

Well, judging by the chart posted above, his blod pressure was up to something like 300/150 which is absolutely insane, he'd burst and splatter blood everywhere if you poke him or something. You don't get that blood pressure from just smoking and eating shit, his whole body was fucked up by that point, no amount of vegetables could fix BP that high.
Maybe his kidneys were fucked, or maybe its because of his little crippled legs, his circulation was probably severly altered and led to his blood vessels becoming crispy.
>>
>>18539490
He'd never get to those numbers today though because the doctors would give him meds to lower his BP long before it ever got to that point.
>>
although an autopsy was not performed on FDR, the embalmers had a difficult time putting a needle in his arteries and found it was like trying to poke through a chunk of concrete. that says something about the overall condition of his circulatory system.
>>
>>18539552
In Lenin's autopsy they found that his arteries were calcified to the point where they would actually make a metallic pinging sound if tapped with a surgical tool. I imagine FDR must have been in similar condition.
>>
all i'll say it was extraordinarily retarded of him to run for a 4th term given his physical condition by that point
>>
>>18539490
Reread the post. It was saying they would tell him to do that stuff back when his blood pressure was still somewhat reasonable.
>>
>>18538494
So true. Which is why Sweden’s involvement in WWII was inevitable. They had resources both the West, Axis, and Soviets needed. They had a weak army and they were in a pivotal position to controlling the Baltic.
This is why Sweden was invaded by all three sides.
Oh wait…

American involvement wasn’t inevitable. You want to plane it seem like it was to justify the political outcome, which has been catastrophic for everyone, because you believe it’s “progress” and you don’t a gang of Chuds stuffing your ass back into the closet.
>>
>>18539615
Sweden was an irrelevant small country, the US was not. There had not been a general European conflict since colonial times that American weren't drawn into, going back to the Nine Years War.
>>
>>18539623
If Germany didn't declare war first, but they did.
>>
>>18539530
in any case, FDR must have been absolutely miserable towards the end. His head probably felt like it was pounding continuously.
>>
as anon said, Eisenhower had an adrenal gland disorder that caused him to overproduce hormones. he also chain smoked, but quit prior to running for president. we don't know exactly what FDR's condition was though.
>>
I'm saying FDR by the end was so fucked up that if he got a papercut he would probably spray blood everywhere like a firehose.

Some suggest he had melanoma, noting the dark spot above his right eyebrow. In any case that could cause inflammation and narrowing of the arteries.
>>
>The president was given a checkup at Bethesda Naval Hospital in March 1944 and determined have high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease causing angina pectoris, and congestive heart failure. He was not informed of the full extent of his condition outside doctors telling him he needed some rest.[9]

>Lyndon Johnson suffered a major heart attack in July 1955. He gave up smoking, but resumed it in 1971. Johnson remarked "I'm an old man, what does it matter now? I always loved cigarettes and missed not smoking them. I don't want to linger like Eisenhower did, when I go I want to go quickly." He suffered another major heart attack in June 1972 while visiting his daughter Lynda in Virginia. The former president survived and was flown back home to Texas, but complained of persistent chest pain probably caused by the death of a portion of the heart muscle. Still, for his last seven months he continued to smoke and eat a junk food diet.

>Two Secret Service agents found Johnson dead in his bed at his Texas ranch on January 22, 1973, having been stricken by a final heart attack while trying to reach for the telephone. Postmortem examination found that two of his three coronary arteries were completely occluded and the third 80% occluded.
>>
>Bill Clinton was known to have episodes of chest pain since 1992. He underwent a bypass operation in 2004 and several months later a second surgery to correct a complication resulting from the bypass, but he apparently never had an actual heart attack.[3]
>>
>>18539480
>blew up Europe
We stayed out of the war for at least half of it retard. Europeans did a pretty good job of blowing up Europe themselves, or was Bomber Harris a secret American?
>>

>Two 4 year terms is superior to one 7 year term since it requires winning another election.
This is why it's bad, because essentially you get elected and the time is short enough to where you're immediately working on getting elected again and essentially it'd be your second term that's the real one because you can do things without the worry of having to be reelected. One 7 year term means the president doesn't need to worry about running for reelection. I guess they'd still have to worry about off-year elections for their party but presumably with only having to worry about getting elected once and for close to what would be a full two terms, the president would theoretically be a lot more able to be independent of their party and have to work more with building proper relations with congress to get things done.

>presumably with only having to worry about getting elected once and for close to what would be a full two terms, the president would theoretically be a lot more able to be independent of their party

Or they can juat go full retard and betray the people that elected them because there's no need to maintain their support. With two 4 year terms you end up running on your promises for the first term and your record for the second.
