The two most common defenses I see are, "She was actually 18, you are misreading the text," which is easily disprovable and debunked, and "it was ok back then." But isn't the whole point of a religious movement like Islam to replace all the bad practices of the time with new correct ones? Lol.

It's very curious to me that the whole "Muh pedo Muhammad" concern trolling was never present in medieval or early modern criticism of Islam and only seems to have become a thing with the rise of the internet.

Islam is not a religion but more of a civilizational identity that allows for the large scale coordination of people. Compare it to Christianity, which faded away in the West while Western civilization endured. If Muslims begin to secularize, their civilization collapses. An atheist majority Arab society cannot exist. The people will simply no longer be Arabs. Same for Persians, Turks, Pakistanis, etc.

So no matter what happens, no matter how bad the early figures in Islam were, Muslims will defend them. They have no choice, it’s either defend them or accept civilizational extinction.
