Byzantine political legacy was much more long lasting than any Arab caliphate. It contributed to the collapse of the Umayyad’s, and beat down the Abbasids taking Armenia, Antioch, Cilicia back. Turks salvaged Islam’s militarily situation. It is telling that the Ottomans definitively settled itself within the former Byzantine heartlands while leaving Arabia/Levant/Iraq as backwaters.
