At the start of the war both Russia and Ukraine used Soviet shit, I wouldn’t say they were technologically superior but definitely had more firepower. Ukraine compensated with its own supply of Western Arms. Both sides have adopted drones in mass, launching strategic air campaigns with them, and use it to stalemate the front into crawling local offensives. The war reminds me of the 80 years war, where the Spanish and Dutch used both new Gunpowder + Fortress Innovations, seasonal atracks and prolonged tit for tat attacks in multiple theatres with foreign countries involved. With a decisive success remaining elusive.

The Confederates sank or crippled a lot of Union ships with “torpedoes”—crude underwater mines, and would have sunk more if not for misfires.

Confederate navy really did break records with their bleeding edge tech. Hunley was the first submarine in history to score a warship kill, but not content with that, it also sunk itself three times.

They really punched far above their weight considering their limited industrial base. A few more ironclads at either end of their stretch of the Mississippi would have made things interesting in the west.
