>>18540047The problem with Reconstruction was that doing it successfully would have entailed at some point confiscating land from the ruling class of the defeated Confederacy (In your example redistributing the vast plantations of Mississippi to former slaves). But that was never going to happen because no one close to any position of power wanted to legitimize and normalize the idea that you could just seize the land/property of the rich, even if for the national good against people who had committed literal treason. The Civil War was when the US really transitioned into capitalism, and the newly empowered business elite of the North were already terrified about setting a precedent that the people could take their toys away. The reason the Radical Republican were so quickly thrown out of power by the Business Republicans teaming up with the Democrats wasn't really due to their policies on racial equality (though it certainly didn't help) it was because the Radicals were seriously talking about land reform.

This would've been brilliant because there were only three million of them in the country at the time and if this had occurred they would today be a nothing more than a small and poor nation that no white men would ever have to visit or think about, they'd just be killing and stealing from each other and peace without causing massive issues for Americans. However, as you might expect, the whites living in those States were not keen on this idea, so it never came to be.

Should've deported them to the carribeans, where the bulk of the transatlantic slaves "settled", if sending them back to africa was too logistically/politically complicated. Given that the Spanish-American war happened only 30 years after abolition, and they gained puerto rico and control of cuba as consequence, not only would it have been timely but could've added to a caesus belli for said war. The south americans could've also sent theirs, it's geographically convenient for the purpose of isolation.
