Lawyers used to be obscenely wealthy in ancient Rome. There's records of them amassing over 300 million sesterces from their work.
To put that in perspective, a Roman legionary soldier at the time earned just 900 sesterces a year.

Late Roman Republic politics were extremely competitive and one way to get an edge on your rivals was to accuse them of crimes (provincial governors were basically all guilty, too)
so a good orator who could convince a Roman court you were innocent was worth tons of money

who's the last non lawyer president?
Carter?

fuck lawyers. they don't actually make anything.

The current one, and the previous one was a lawyer very briefly

Because the barriers to entry to become a lawyer are much lower than they were in the past, so now any Joe Schmo off the street can become a lawyer.

Nothing, attorneys still make at least 3 figures per hour of work. I wish court justice was more accessible, I don't like it that there's a tax-funded, government-owned place for dispute resolution, provided as public service to citizens of the nation, but it's super-expensive and last resort even for the wealthiest corporations.

why it's so expensive then?
