>student-led demonstrations erupt in a major city
>protesting against authoritarianism of the ruling party, arrests of opposition leaders and political activities, suppression of the press and rights
>students demanded freedom of speech, democratization, and reforms
>soon, hundreds of thousands of people joined the protestors
>demonstrations were mostly peaceful, although some students raided police stations and formed self defence militias
>the authoritarian single-party state dictator denounced the student protestors as "foreign funded agitators" and authorized the army to violently retake the city
>soldiers indiscriminately fired into crowds, thousands massacred, bodies disposed like trash, army suffered a few hundred casualties from students fighting back
>denial of this event, the brutal state suppression, and doubting the victim counts is necessary to rise in the political ranks of the country to this day
>be the Gwangju, South Korea protests of 1980

>denounced the student protestors as "foreign funded agitators"
If you've ever interacted with a normie you know this accusation is actually true 100% of the time. If they're chimping out it's because someone is paying a lot of money to make it happen.

Some people have actual convictions

Not really. People will do what is convenient, fun, or profitable at a given moment in time. That's pretty much it. There are always a small handful of zealots, but their zealotry comes from psychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia or OCD rather than something honorable.

Jeju islands are even worse

I wonder what would happen to Jeju if the South failed to keep the Pusan perimeter until the Incheon landings. Would it become the South Korean version of Taiwan?
>>
Fun fact about the Gwangju uprising, the Americans volunteered their zogbots stationed in Korea to go in and massacre the protestors themselves, because muh gommunism. Imagine THOSE optics.

This is a false dichotomy, what you are missing here is the fact that for many many people what is 'fun' is rioting and feeling like they are changing the historical course of their country forever. Idiotic youths and middle class people (but especially youths) love rioting and protesting and getting all hyped up about this or that even if it is a really fucking dumb idea and makes no sense.
As for people with talent and convictions, these do exist but they never get to do anything and if something happens the power is usually in the hands of the paid agitators or the thrill seekers.
