>Emperor Justinian rears up an idol of "Christ" in Constantinople and fabricates a story that it came from Edessa
>His reign is plagued by treachery, earthquakes, literal plagues, and a giant purple whale
>Leo III Isaurian smashes the idols that God hates
>God gives him rest from the heathen hordes
>Skanky empress Irene rears up the idols that God hates
>Heathen hordes plunder the empire thereafter
really makes you think

>just a break from the heathen hoards
>leaves the empire in the tiniest state up to that point
>no heavenly intervention of great reconquest
Really crappy reward from YHWH if you ask me. Either that or the idols didn’t make a difference and the empire was still fucked beyond belief.

It matches God's behavior in the past. Like when Josiah smashed all the idols and God delayed the destruction of Judea for as long as Josiah lived as a reward to him but said he was still going to destroy Judea because they pissed him off too much with their idols.
