Deportation of Hungarian Jews to death camps began. This was done pseudo-inline with the Hungarian constitution, of course ignoring the blatant coercion against Horthy.On 29 August 1944 Horthy dismissed Sztójay and replaced him with Géza Lakatos, and started making attempts at a separate peace with the Soviets. Deportation of Hungarian Jews to death camps briefly ceased or at least slowed.On 15 October 1944, in agreement with the Soviets, Horthy attempted to have the Hungarian armed forces cease fighting the Soviets and turn on the Nazis, only to be thwarted by the Nazis and pro-Nazi members of his government. Less than ~200 Hungarian military personnel went over to the Soviets in line with Horthy's decree at the time. Horthy was replaced with the mentally ill fascist Arrow Cross leader Ferenc Szálasi, and deportation and mass murder of Hungarian Jews resumed.
