He was a man of will who genuinely believed what he was doing was right. You can see in OP image he actually looks rather morose, but not like a child who dropped their ice cream, he is looking away with concern, yet retains a level of sternness and determination. Like, perhaps, a teacher who notices a student is falling behind and wondering what might be happening at home or a surgeon making a difficult decision on how to operate. A great burden was on his shoulders and he chose to live his life trying to heal the world.
