Could the Romans have taken North America easily if the American continent had been right next to Europe?
>Could the Romans have taken North America easily if the American continent had been right next to Eur-ACKWithout ocean faring ships? lol
>>18545308Have you even looked at the map?
>>18545299It would take them a while. The thing about Roman imperialism is that they prefer to conquer other civilizations versus conquering barbarians. This is largely because when you conquer another civilization, there is already existing infrastructure you just need to slightly modify to your needs. This is versus conquering some bum village in the middle of nowhere, where you then have to spend resources to bring them up to your level before you can properly exploit them.
>>18545348Not saying that the Americas didn't have civilizations. I think the Maya were contemporary with the Romans, but there isn't a whole lot more of them concentrated around, like in the Middle East or the Fertile Crescent. Also, another problem is trade. The wealthiest part of the Empire would still be in the east, even if they do get their hands on New World crops. Granted, I think Carthage would probably be stronger in this timeline, because we know they sailed past the the Straits of Iberia.
>>18545352The Maya were more like a pre-Edo Japan civilization than a Roman one, it was not really as sophisticated as Greece or Rome. At least not in the same aspects
>>18545299vgh...
>>18545352The American civilizations that were contemporary to Rome were in the American midwest, Mexico/Guatemala, the Andes, and the Amazon, all prohibitively far away even with your map. >>18545802In Mesoamerica, Teotihuacan, El Mirador, and the Oaxaca valley would have been the most noteworthy guys I believe. Teotihuacan and El Mirador actually would have been some of the biggest cities on earth at that time, they had a lot of wealth, connections, and unique trade goods, and if they were like later Mesoamerican civilizations, a system of slavery already in place. The Romans would have considered them not only worth conquering but a priority target. However, their enormous populations alone would have made it extremely difficult. Probably doable if they were right next door like Carthage or Gaul, but not remotely feasible at extreme distance. They'd be ideal for small coastal raids if it weren't for the brutal storms of the Caribbean.
With that ocean current? The sea level would be a lot lower and more saline, and bottled up north. Imagine the winters in Gaul. We're looking at ice caps down to the Alps and Pyrenees. Also North America isn't populated with disease-suspectible Siberians. It's white. Bantu expansion doesn't happen because there simply aren't any jungles, it's all desert people. So tall thin Nubians everywhere. Who don't care for the ocean life.
>>18545309The Romans never even made it to Sardinia, to say nothing of your hypothetical new world. Why don't you go read a book, faggot
>>18546261Kek, nu-/his/ won't get it
