China, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, Venezuela and now Cuba are changing or have already changed their systems because they realised that clinging to a dying ideology is a fool's errand.

Initially the idea for the bolsheviks was to give the political power to the soviets (councils) that had popped up across Russia after the February Revolution. Some form of co-op socialism with an overarching political body would've probably been closer to their vision than the micro-managed centrally planned economy.
