But in general, there is a higher bar now for the acceptability of suicide. And that's likely more to do with so few suicides nowadays having circumstances around them that make them feel romantic and noble. So it gives the whole thing a more negative association.That said, I do think there is a trend towards viewing suicide more sympathetically in general. I see more and more people viewing mental illness, and particularly depression, as a societal ill rather than as a personal failing. Which turns suicides into tragic symptoms of a sick society rather than isolated acts of cowardice.
