We're now on the 39th day of my daily presidents threads celebrating the 250th anniversary of the USA.
Today we have Ronald Reagan (2/6/1911 - 6/5/2004), who served as president from 1981 to 1988. Prior to being president, he was a movie star, president of the screen actor's guild, and governor of California. He was also in the army during WW2.
Notable actions or events during his presidency include Reaganomics, the PATCO Strike, the Savings and Loan Crisis, the Immigration Reform and Control Act, Engel v. Vitale, the Strategic Defense Initiative, the Reagan Doctrine, the Invasion of Grenada, his narrowly failed Assassination Attempt, the War on Drugs, the AIDS Epidemic, Operation El Dorado Canyon, the Iran-Contra Affair, the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, the Bitburg Controversy, and the 1983 Beirut Barracks Bombings,

What do you think of the movie star with Alzheimer's?

So...what was his best movie in terms of acting?
>>
He’s the Horseman of Death for American middle class.
>>
2/10 president. destroyed this country forever and allowed 1 million Americans to die of AIDS.
>>
>>18549949
How was it his fault that faggots got fucked in the ass by 20 other men a week?
>>
reminder that Nancy was from an old California blue blood family and believed the rich should just be able to do anything they wanted with no limits
>>
>>18549951
Someone want to reprimand Ryan White for getting his butthole fingered in a leather parade? I'm sure he totally did that stuff and that's why he got AIDS.
>>
>>18549949
he did start caring when his actor buddies began dropping of AIDS
>>
also reminder that the day when Nancy gave birth to their daughter he wasn't there he was off in bed with some actress
>>
>>18549949
uh...Iran-Contra?
>>
ITT: LBJfag samefags furiously
>>
he also repealed the Fairness Doctrine which allowed shock jocks like Rush Limbaugh to emerge and destroy quality broadcasting and degrade political discussion
>>
>>18549931
the era when the Republican party went full-out to appealing to the latent hatred and bigotry of the working class

>if only faggots were back in the closet and blacks were put back in chains and all environmental and health laws were repealed and you could marry a 10 year old then everything would be ok
>>
I mean, he shouldn't have signed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act although it was already 21 in my state so didn't affect anything here, but...

What is it about Reagan that makes so many people, liberal and conservative, go crazy? Specifically those who hate him, though I acknowledge the hero worship he can get is likewise weird. People speak about him as though the United States collapsed in 1989, as though the 90s and the 00s did not happen and that all modern issues faced by the United States today all trace back to him and not the six Presidents following him. It has almost been 40 years since he left office and some people, right and left, act as though he is the incumbent currently writing policy for both the Republicans and the Democrats. I completely appreciate arguments that he started a lot of the current issues but acting as though none of the following Presidents could have influenced or stopped them is just nonsensical.
>>
>>18550060
he doesn't cause quite as much of a shitstorm as Nixon though
>>
>>18550060
I honestly dont get it. I think from a completely sober stance, hes a decent enough president. The people who froth at the mouth with thinking he was the greatest or worse president come across as hyper partisan retards. It gets to insane schizo stuff like blaming Reagan for AIDS or crack.
>>
>>18550108
maybe he didn't cause AIDS but he also did nothing to stop it
>>
>cut funding for child nutrition programs
>declared ketchup a vegetable
>>
>>18550114
>cut funding for child nutrition programs
wasn't most of that going to POCs though?
>>

Same thing, if not even more rabid, with Margaret Thatcher in the UK. A lot of people got very comfortable during the post-war consensus, so comfortable that they didn't notice the house collapsing around them.
>>
>>18549927
King’s Row.
>>
>>18550133
why do rightists want poor black children to starve?
>>
>>18550158
My issue with the whole "Thatcher caused literally every problem the UK has" is that the conversation never includes how utterly awful the late seventies were. That is not to excuse the excesses of her policies, specifically de-industrialization, but some people are either genuinely ignorant of Britain's position in 1979 or act like Saint Clement Atlee created a utopia that was only ended by the arch satan Thatcher due to her needing to sustain herself on the blood of the poor. Not to imply that Thatcher doesn't also have her own fan club who portray her as the sole reason the UK still floats.
>>
>>18550227
yep, spot on mate.
>>
>>18550227
as you will see same here. America was a crumbling mess in the Carter years with high inflation, decaying urban areas, extremely high crime and murder rates, terrible cars, etc.

Mr. President, you're 73. You are the oldest man to ever be president. I remember during the Cuban Missile Crisis how President Kennedy had to go for days without sleep. If a similar situation were to happen again, do you think you'd be up to it?"

"Absolutely I would. You know, I have said before that I will not make age an issue in this campaign, in particular not my opponent's youthfulness and inexperience."

>He died two weeks after his 2010 wedding of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound
nagged to death, grim
>>
didn't he rape some chick at his house back when he was an actor?
>>
>>18549919
You know something? He DID say well a lot.
>>
>>18549919
An emptyheaded suit for the Friedmanites who wanted to empower the ultra-rich, the Heritage Foundation wahabbists who want America to be run by a Christian Taliban and in general everything that's gone wrong in this country over the last 45 years. Considering he's the one who nominated Greenspan as Fed chairman, whose policies are directly responsible for the 2008 financial crash, he's directly responsible for stealing away the futures of the post-Boomer generations. He was an arrogant little faggot who was mad he got taxed making more money than most people while having to work on a handful of films a year. Fuck him, he is pure evil and I wish Hell were real because I know he'd be roasting in it.
>>
>>18549967
A literal traitor. How is "I'm too old and retarded to know what my subordinates were doing?" seen as any kind of acceptable defense? Not that I believe that of course, he full well knew what was going on but let's say "I'm a doddering old retard" defense is true. He still should have been removed from office over it.

ITT: LBJfag has a chimpout

Reagan's team handled I-C extremely well in a way Nixon's guys did not handle Watergate well, and he deployed his best acting skills to look like a befuddled old man, and it worked. Also Oliver North was a certified giga Chad who melted women's panties off of them.

Some of said hate was engineered by these groups who profited from the Cold War and were unhappy that he brought it to an end.

He is the US president most responsible for the death of the USSR?

How long until we reach presidents anons actually remember living under?

we can't go up to Obama, anon

then again Mondale still won 37M votes in '84. those electoral landslide maps look less impressive when you see the popular votes, they make it look like Reagan won 90% of the vote.
