But let's be honest here, a lot of Nicky's suffering was caused by his own actions. He was a narcissistic man child who fucked up the first decade of his reign by holding on to his father's ideals of autocracy while lacking his skills and charisma. The war against Japan, which was both avoidable and winnable, was the cherry on top of the dung cake. Afterwards the Empire made great progress until WW1 broke loose, but even that was because Nicholas was pressured by necessity rather than a him having a genuine desire for modernising Russia.
