The manchu general (I forget his name one of the aisin goro clan) after he entered Nanjing basically told the commanders if the Ming had not infought so badly after Beijing and formed a defense on the yellow river there is no chance he could have pushed farther south. The Manchus were not numerous and they did not have enough han local support.
