Is modern war more traumatizing than it was in the past? Are there any records of Romans having PTSD?
>>18552669Modern war is characterized by higher levels of permanent brain damage. The amount of time spent "on edge" for the modern infantryman is far more than the ancient and medieval. Weeks on end of missing sleep = permanent brain damage. This, more or less, is what "shell shock" was during WWI. Rather than armies marching, then engaging, then retreating, soldiers sat in trenches getting shelled constantly, unable to sleep. American WWII vets of the European theater suffered very little "PTSD" due to the fact their campaign was logistically perfect; they always got enough rest.
The Civil War did not have shell shock until the Overland Campaign, when a month of continuous fighting without a rest mentally and physically crippled thousands of soldiers.
This is a retarded question on so many levels it's giving me hypertension trying to figure out a way to answer it. It contains nearly every category of historical fallacy.
Yes, there are records of PTSD-like symptoms with soldiers in ancient times, such as having persistent nightmares etc., but obviously they didn’t call it PTSD.But modern war is worse for that in the sense that even though war campaigns in the past were also shit for various reasons (disease, supply problems, hard forever marches to the battlefields, pests etc.), the actual battles were usually short and clearly defined. In modern day, you have to be constantly afraid of artillery, airstrikes, now drones too, and constantly continuing endless industrial warfare such as WWI (like >>18552675 already noted) simply didn’t exist back then. So even if wars in the past were shitty to participate in, you at least had a very good idea whether you were in danger or not, meaning that you didn’t have to be on the edge for months and months and obviously continuous sense of danger is extra crippling mentally.
>>18552669Sort of. Most cases of PTSD emerge from WW1 and 2. The environment which created these mass PTSD cases are no longer used but PTSD is still a thing. Ammianus recounts a Roman officer who after years of service completely changed how he acted, from brave to averse and so on and I expect they underwent some form of PTSD, or at least war fatigue.
Technology ruined war, you could be a beefy guy and get wrecked by a twink using a more advanced tool than youI wish nukes/guns didnt existThe sword itself is very advanced too, most sword fights end in a minute or too, you can not brute force your way against technology, fighting is meaningless
>>18552669Absolutely.You’re almost never safe on the modern battlefield. You can step on a landmine, get picked off by a sniper or stray fire/shrapnel, blown up by a suicide drone, etc. Before gunpowder arrows were at least out of range at some point.
>>18552669It's bc of explosions and the affect thry have on our brains. Another issue is when people fought back then it lasted maybe a few hours. Then you either won or died or retreated. In modern warfare your always on edge and terrified bc of motors and artillery and snipers and bombers. It messed up your amygdala and gives you ptsd. Now historical writers did notice veterans of wars had messed up personalities and had terrible nightmares too but something tell me it wasn't as bad as ptsd. Another thing is you cam get ptsd from alot of things. Domestic violence. Abuse when a kid. Bullying. Many things can give you ptsd but there are levels to it. Some ptsd is a little bad. Some is relaly terrible. Modern warfare gives you way worse ptsd.

>>18552669 In the classic Greek play Ajax, characters describe a shell-shocked warrior sitting in his tent with eyes glazed, unseeing contemplation of oblivionAt the battle of Marathon, a hysterical greek soldier went blind when he saw Ares in the battle
