Did they go too far, since the Teutonic character naturally desires an autocrat as Churchill said, or did they not go far enough with marginalising the conservatives, since without the weak constitution, monarchist tolerance and strong presidencial decree the Nazis wouldn't have been able to manipulate their way to total control?
>>18553490No. Paul Hindenburg was inevitable but Hitler/NSDAP was not.>Did they go too far, since the Teutonic character naturally desires an autocrat as Churchill said, This was post-hoc nonsense essentializing contingent elements. Post-war west germany was/is a perfectly functional western democracy.
It's impossible to have a serious discussion about the Weimar Republic since every illiterate moron online is recirculating hundred year old Nazi propaganda repackaged in 2005 Stormfront memes about joos eating kids in Berlin.
>>18553502the nazis can't hurt you now, xister
>>18553498The problem is few Germans were down for this democracy thing anyway, and they were happily swayed by Nazi and communist populist rhetoric once the Great Depression hit. Holding Wilhelm II responsible for the Great War is one thing, but they should have forced abdication and regency with a ceremonial monarchy. It would have kept the conservatives placated.
>>18553507Would it have? Even the Kapp Putsch wasn't trying to bring back the monarchy, and the monarchists you do see in Germany in the following decades were fairly cool on the Nazis and Hitler, running the political spectrum from various types of conservatives and nationalists to liberal democrats.I do agree democracy wasn't too many people's first choice in 1919 or even in 1933, I just don't think some sort of constitutional monarchy would have been seen as much better.
>>18553490>>18553519half-truth. Germany was an amalgamation of different smaller states poorly stitched together in 1871 and some had liberal political traditions, others did not.
Nah, if the Nazis hadn’t been the first authoritarians to grab the power, then the KPD would have done the same. Democracy was doomed there.
>I'm a Western liberal democracy>most of my citizens aren't huge fans, but we'll have to prevail for the good of Germany, by force if necessary >eroding the Reichstag and constitution is fine, it's necessary >but I would never ever ever ever ever crack down on the far right for some reason, golly gee how could this happen >obviously the communists have to be suppressed, they're anti-electoral and revolutionary >you know what, fuck the social democrats too, who cares if they support the republic, they're cucks>but the poor nazis? the itty bitty smol bean NSDAP? We just can't really come around to dealing with them!>The industrialists and Prussian aristocracy like them, and we do need an army and industry for a state, surely nothing bad will happen.
The fault was the Great Depression. Americans just can't keep their usury in their pants as always.
>>18553507Communism is the only real form of democracy.
