I was recently doing a but of reading on the french revolution and was consistently astonished by King Louis' stupidity after being removed from versailles. He truly was incapable of rising to the moment, and walked into such obvious traps set for him by vetoing anti emigre laws and emergency war acts, making it look like he was abusing his power to betray France and support the austrian invasion, which of course he was. Then with his ridiculous escape plan he leaves behind this venomous letter denouncing the revolution and national assembly, saying everything he did had been due to duress, and he was lying whenever he swore allegiance to the revolution. A letter he had absolutely no reason to write other than I guess he enjoyed doing it. But of course when the escape plan failed and he was brought back there was no coming back from that.
