On his wikipedia article it says he's Sephardi, and when he and his student Aaron came onto Matan Evan's podcast his student said that he and Yosef are Sephardim.

He is Sephardi. His dad is a Moroccan jew. Most Moroccan jews are the descendants of Spanish Jews (because of the 1492 expulsion). And since his dad is Sephardi; Mizrachi would be considered Sephardi under Jewish law. Since you follow the custom/minhag of the Father/Husband.

Now the reason he is named Mizrachi is because when Israel was founded; many Jews Hebraized their surnames via government recommendation. It was the policy of the Israeli government to give any Jew from the middle east the surname "Mizrachi" and from Europe "Ashkenazi" even though those respective Jews may not be Mizrachi or Ashkenazi.
