Who were the Huns and where did they come from?
>>
They were Goths, who adopted Scythian customs and thus became unrecognizable to the other Germanics, but they still spoke Goth as their primary language.

I thought they came from Mongolia? They did have a habit of absorbing many conquered tribes into their armies, I’m sure a lot of them were goths as well.

The asiatic hapa Hunnic horselords absorbed the Rugii colony of the southern baltic region because this colony (which became the Wielbark) is where Skadi previously had relocated after separating from Njord,- in an attempt at retaining some of the Scythian traditions of her people.
The Huns immediately recognized this mixed tribe as a fellow (but inferior) horsetribe, which is why many of their warriors took Rugi wives.
Rugila, Octar and Attila are all Rugii-hapa names of individuals born of Hun-male, rugii-female couples.
tldr;
Snorri wrote down the Huns as Hønir.

Calling this monstrosity an "empire" is a sick joke. It was literally just a camp in hungary with a bunch of horseman who would terrorize people around them. Built nothing and collapsed after 1 khan.

My loves, we have samples of the Huns, and the elites were Asian; they did indeed have multiracial mercenaries, from Franks to Visigoths, but their lingua franca was an Eastern, not Germanic, language.

A central asian people from Mongolia. Might have spoken a para-Mongolic language related to proto-Turkic

But as the Huns spread west, like with all steppe peoples, they confederated, took slaves, had allies and vassals, intermarried, or forcibly assimilated everyone on their way. If you walked around a hunnic camp on the danube frontier you might hear people speaking Hunnic, Sarmatian, Yeniseian, Gothic, Burgundian, Gepid, proto-Slavic…

Well said, I’ve always seen the Huns as the outlaw biker gang of the ancient world. Interesting society.

>He was a man born into the world to shake the nations, the scourge of all lands, who in some way terrified all mankind by the dreadful rumors noised abroad concerning him. He was haughty in his walk, rolling his eyes hither and thither, so that the power of his proud spirit appeared in the movement of his body. He was indeed a lover of war, yet restrained in action, mighty in counsel, gracious to suppliants and lenient to those who were once received into his protection. Short of stature, with a broad chest and a large head; his eyes were small, his beard thin and sprinkled with grey; and he had a flat nose and swarthy skin, showing evidence of his origin.
They were Mongoloids.

There's something important people need to know about the Huns and their empire. Because all the people who met and wrote about the Huns were Greco-Romans, the borders of the western part of the empire of the Huns are well-defined. However, we have no idea how far east their empire went because the Greco-Romans themselves didn't know. Some historians suspect that the empire of the Huns was larger than is known for that reason.

An 1800's French Chinaboo found out they were attacked by another nomadic bow hunting group, and said "these were the same people."
Nomadic horse riding bowmen can be found all over the Eurasian steppe. It's possible they may have had some Mongol DNA, but it's perhaps an overexaggeration to say they were the same group that invaded China. The Mongols didn't arrive in Europe for another 800 years or so.
