We're now on Day #5 of my daily US states threads in honor of the 250th anniversary of the country.California joined as the 31st state on 9/9/1850. Prior a part of New Spain, a group of American settlers incited a revolt and proclaimed the area a republic. Owing to the timing of the event occurring during the Mexican-American War, California was swiftly inducted into the Union. The name California has an unknown origin, but is most likely derived from an island in the 1510 story of Queen Calafia. It is the most populous state with a population of 39.3 Million and is the second largest state with a size of 163.7k square miles. Its largest city is Los Angeles and its capital is Sacramento. Two presidents have come from California (Nixon, Reagan). The discovery of gold in 1848 prompted the California Gold Rush, bringing an unprecedented number of settlers into the region. This also culminated in the California Genocide of its Native Americans. In the 1920's, California became the heart of the American film industry, and in the late 20th century it became the heart of the American tech industry with Silicon Valley. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean has made it a hotbed of immigration from Asia. The state's ecology varies between the Pacific Coast, the Sierra Nevada, the Redwood Forests, Central Valley, and the Mojave Desert. Death Valley is the hottest known location on the planet. California sits along a fault line and is disaster prone. A famous earthquake in 1906 all but annihilated San Francisco. In recent times, wildfires have become a serious problem. California has a massive economy, and if it were to secede it would be one of the largest economies in the world. What do you think of the Golden State?
>>18575898The worst state. We should give it back to Mexico. And everyone living there should be deported to Mexico.Lol.
>>18575898This thread is going to go all sorts of wrong.
Literally the only good state.>best consumer protection laws in the union (I know the bar is low, this is muttistan after all)>net payer of federal income tax, ends up babysitting the redneck retards in the rest of the country>perfect climate>best food>kino industries>makes retarded rednecks seetheI support #Calexit to turn California into the 4th richest country in the world while destroying all red states by depriving them of their retard shartmart welfare.
>>18575994half of the state is retarded rednecks tho
>>18575898A mix of obnoxious white liberals, hoodrats, and cholos. Hell on Earth.
>>18575898LA is the most miserable city I've ever been to. You couldn't pay me to live there. Can't comment on California outside of LA, only driven through other cities.
>>18575994>kino industriesthis isn't 1965. CA was fucked by the late 2000s recession and didn't recover.
>>18575994Begging the same rednecks for water because they mismanaged their ecosystem and are in the process of becoming a desert.
Another Sun Belt state that was mostly built up by WWII and the Cold War. Silicon Valley was the result of wartime development.
it's been commonly asserted that the GOP "lost" the state in the 90s, however one should remember that state politics since the 50s were always pretty strongly Democrat-dominated. Republicans continued to mostly win California in presidential elections, but generally because of the defense/aerospace industries there.
>>18576039Which state is Silicon Valley again? Alabama?>>18576056Ah yes, it was definitely Newsom poured all the reserve water into random valleys and called it "opening the magic water tap to fight the LA fires."
>>18576070>Which state is Silicon Valley again?it's just H1B1 jeets writing AIslop code now this isn't the 80s.
>>18576070Alabama does have a major aerospace, tech, and science industry. Huntsville is called Rocket City for a reason.
it was the Golden State for a long time but now it's an unlivable banana republic
>>18575898https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_California_Proposition_14>state goes to shit the minute nonwhites move inMany such cases!
>>18576072Wow they were slopcoding in 2018 too? What time machine model do they use?>>18576078>science industryNigga they think the Earth is 6000 years old.
>>18576070More like poor standards in fire regulation that lead to ineffective removal of dry dead trees, along with feeding all of Northern California’s water supply into overly populated South California cities. All the progressive yapping turns to embers as insurance companies rugpull LA inhabitants plans right before fire season, it’s quite bizarre and possibly a racket.
>>18576068I think they purposely do this to keep the Southern states in line.>show video clip of the Folsom Street Fair>"If you make the wrong choice in November, this will come to your town."
i remember how Steve Jobs before he died told Obama "Apple can't afford to manufacture in California now like we did 25 years ago." the state's regulatory climate is absolutely horrendous.
I can't believe so many Mexicans live in California!I simply cannot fathom why there are so many Mexicans living in Sacremento, San Fransisco, San Jose, Santa Rosa, Fresno, Monterrey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Pasadena, San Bernadino, Santa Ana, Costa Mesa, Chino, Laguna Niguel, San Clemente, Del Mar, Playa Del Ray, San Diego, Modesto, Montebello, Chula Vista, La Mesa, San Marcos, Mission Viejo, Yorba Linda, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Maria, Moreno, San Jacinto, Santa Cruz, Temecula, and Fontana just to name a fewI guess we'll never know....
>>18576030it's nice if you're rich
>>18575898> The name California has an unknown originIsn't it was name of paradise country from medieval Spanish fairy tales?
>>18576165those are all places in spain. dont see a lot of mexicans over there tho hmm
>>18576165California had a ridiculously small Mexican population when it was first taken by the US, like 10,000 people total. It was primarily Natives that inhabited it. Most of the Mexicans living in CA moved there between the late 20th century to today.
>>18576201erm but the maps showed mexico as this big blob over western america that means there was a lot of mexicans there
>>18576165>disingenuous leftist retard trying to gaslight people
>>18575898Best state and its not even close. New York? Virginia? Florida? Texas? lmfao
California should secede the us and join civilization (Hispanic America).
>>18576139He wasn't talking about California exclusively, he was using his state as shorthand for the country as a whole, otherwise he would've put factories in Texas or something instead
>>18576263New Hampshire is by far the best state. Anyone who would take CA over NH is retarded.
>>18576180>>18575898The name "California" roughly translates to "The Land of Kings" and is of Spanish-Arabic origin (The root of the name comes from the Arabic term "Caliph"). It originally referred to the mythical Island of California from the Spanish Romance novel Las sergas de Esplandián from 1510. Surprised OP could fuck up like this
>>18576265California has a higher GDP than every central American nation and Mexico combined. If anything, you lot should be Californian vassal states.
>>18576285Incorrect sirThe book it comes from is true, but its the island of the pagan Queen Calafia, who was like a black amazonian queen. Which is the story OP is referring to. The book it comes from is Castilian.OP got it right
>>18576282I'd definitely not take New Hampshire in the winter months over California.
>>18576305The name of Queen Calafia itself is of Spanish-Arabic origin, as "Caliph" in this context is synonymous with "foreign/exotic ruler" hence why that's her name.
>>18576201Over 500,000 people in California claim Californios heritage
>>18576561So around 3% or so of Hispanics in California descend from that same small population. Which means 97% do not.
>>18576577Sure but also keep in mind Mexicans were considered white on the census as late as 1940 and many of them were classified as white up until 1970 when race on the census became self-identified and white was split into hispanic/non-hispanic ethnicities in which case many of them continued to just call themselves white anyways. There's this narrative that Mexicans magically weren't allowed in the US at all before 1964 but it's not that simple, and border security was even less of a thing back then. Obviously in any case you're going to have a lot of people of hispanic/Mexican origin choosing to live in areas with Spanish place names
>>18576577Most of them were living in Honduras back when it was a part of Mexico.
>>18576030>LA is the most miserable city I've ever been to.some parts can be but LA is also a massive metropolis, Orange County is pretty much nothing like South Central for example despite being in relative proximity to it
>all vehicles made in 1974 and later require biennial emissions testingThat sums up this Orwellian state in a nutshell.
>>18576627CA was the first state with vehicle emissions laws in the 60s, before there were any Federal ones.
>>18576627>"dude I fucking love unbreathable air!" - you
>>18575994Trump cutting off some federal money almost forced Newsom to rollback the benefits he gave to the undocumented. We do have the best weather in the world though. The South can keep its humidity and the Europeans can keep their carbon targets. I'm keeping my AC at 69 degrees.
>>18576922Trumps federal cutbacks impacted flyover states (ironically where his voter base lives) far worse than the Big Economy states (California, Texas, Florida, New York et al), state like California already provide their own state-level services and for states like Texas who refuse to integrate with the national power grid and suffer rolling blackouts during storm season are independent to a fault.
>>18576165Based. My great great great grandfather was a Californio.
>>18575898California is the only state founded by a canonized saint. More people would know this if Caltrans would return his statue back to the 280 Freeway.
The best part about living here is how easy it is to get strong edibles delivered straight to your front door legally
>>18575898I live in Oregon, but I like our best coast neighbors. I5 is like this nostalgic gateway to wonder for me because when I was little my family would go on trips along it. The Monterey Bay aquarium is the best in the goddamn world. Being a little sperg and getting to spend the night there in the jellyfish exhibit remains one of my favorite memories. Cali is awesome.

>>18576922the West Coast has that Goldilocks zone of being at a moderate latitude but also an oceanic climate to prevent temperature extremes over the year
>>18576913you know smog was mostly an LA issue right? and mostly because the city is in a bowl.
>>18576927'hol up there. why does CA have blackouts every summer from their inadequate power grid?
>>18577794>you know that was just an issue in our biggest city and the place everyone thinks about when they think about california, right?
>>18576008all the areas with jobs and money that actually matter aren't
If you don't live in the City of Los Angeles, the City of San Fernando, the City of Santa Monica, the City of Culver City, the City of West Hollywood, the City of Beverly Hills, La Rambla, Marina del Rey, Ladera Heights, Alsace, or View Park-Windsor Hills, you might as well not even exist.
>During the Civil War, SoCal, including most of the Californio population, tended to be pro-Confederate while NorCal was Unionist but since the state government and legislature were located in the north in Sacramento there was no serious danger of California seceding. Col. Henry Sibley's Southwestern expedition in early 1862 was an unsuccessful attempt by the Confederates to reach California and link up with secessionists there.>The postwar construction of the trans-continental railroad helped bind the West Coast to the rest of the country and reduced the likelihood that it might decide to secede.

California is the undisputed best state in the country and it's not even close, it's why it's still the most populous state, it's also the most expensive state because too many people want to move there
>>18578448t. guy who just woke up from a coma he was in for 30 yearsI have some bad news about California nowadays...
>>18575935I'm unimpressed so far.
it was the Golden State in the 60s, 70s, 80s, even in the 2000s it was still pretty nice but the place died forever in 2008
>>18575898Old Scratch himself would be afraid to go near Marin County.
>>18575994>best consumer protection laws in the unionwhat are some good consumer production laws you guys got?
California and Texas are the only two states that could exist as independent countries if they split from the union save for maybe Alaska
>>18579719Where would California get water from?
>>18579729California gets the vast majority of its water from within the state itself
>>18578954California is still the most populous state (despite its best efforts to keep poors out of it) so I don't know what exactly you mean by this
