Why was he like this.. and more importantly how did it work so well?

Westpoint wargames confirm that were every southern was as brash a dashing chevalier as he the south could have quickly overrun Pennsylvania and into upstate New York essentially cutting the Union in half and causing absolute chaos. I don't think the south could gain an unconditional surrender, but they would have caused such a panic that the already unstable Lincoln administration would be forced into a ceasefire and pull back troops from the border and key fortifications until the south was confident the north would not renege. The south would have won its freedom against a larger better equipped foe.

I mean it was the closest you could get to actual blitzkrieg tactics during the 19th century so it makes sense.
If the Confederates gave all their men pervitin they probably could have pulled it off.

Prussia perfected it (railway and telegram) while Austria catch off guard in their ex-Danish territory, sound familiar?

>Earl Van Dorn
An ok cavalry general who got routed the one time he was in command of an army at Pea Ridge, also one of the only times the Secesh had superior numbers. Then he got domed by a civilian who was protecting the honor of his wife or possibly daughter from notorious playa Van Dorn. Right around the same time, Forrest gets into a brawl with a junior officer and kills him while getting seriously wounded, taking months to recover. Thus, two of the biggest cavalry generals in the west are missing while Grant had the Rebs chasing their own tails as he takes Vicksburg. That hotheaded cavalier shit could pay off in the battlefield at times but not if you can’t control your lust or anger.

I wonder if Van Dorn took command at Belmont and swapped Polk under Benjamin McCulloch leadership at Elkhorn Tavern?
