How much of the "serial killer era" just comes down to lead poisoning back in the day?
>>
The serial killer era was just the sweet spot of forensic science and law enforcement co-operation being advanced enough to link murders to a single culprit but not advanced enough to immediately catch them.

There were likely just as many serial killers before then but they ended up hanging for a single murder and never linked to the others or just never being caught.

It's alarming how good law enforcement has gotten. Cutting down on serial killers isn't worth the downsides of this.

?
45% of American murders go unsolved
>>
>>18577888
Because of blacks killing each other and following the "no snitching" rule
>>
Not really, boomers just were like that.
>>
>>18577724
It was more about law enforcement allowing every new killer to get huge media publicity (holding press conferences after murders, allowing public court hearings etc.), and the media treating murderers like celebrities. They eventually realized that this inspires copycats so now they try to keep public attention away from murders.

Not like society got smarter as a whole, now instead of serial killers, we treat mass shooters as celebrities, and inspire copycats. It's kind of insane that the average persone can name at least 3 mass shooters (also at least 3 serial killers, but all of them from decades ago).

Yeah the craigslist killer wasn't discussed until he was caught
>>
>>18577888
And a lot of those are gang related. There's very little will for the police to pursue such cases when you have no cooperative witnesses
>>
>>18577735
this is a joke, right? cops are not any smarter than they were in the 60s-70s actually they're getting dumber.
>>

b b but AI
>>
Zoomlennials are not as violent or degenerate as boomers were, boomers were all about pushing boundaries and testing the limits of what you could get away with.
>>
>>18578343
So, the lead
>>
>>18578332
also while forensic tools are more advanced today they're not foolproof, no human-created tool can be by definition and cops are also not above doing shady shit like planting DNA evidence when they don't have a suspect
>>
>>18577693
Haha look at that fucking dog
>>
>>18578552
TRUE!

That number is lower than it should be.

None.
It was the emptying of the Insane Asylums, and the dumping of untreated lunatics into the general population, beginning around 1965.
>>
>>18577693
Well that's one of the theories. Another is the presidential administrations in the latter half of the 20th century emptying out the asylums, deinstitutionalization, + PTSD parents.
I think the nature of media reporting now has just changed so connections aren't drawn between stranger-on-stranger serial murders, or it's kept mostly quiet to not repeat mistakes of the past.
>>
>>18577895
It shouldn't matter if no one cooperates as witnesses, technology should make up for that, or so the theories go.
>>
>>18577724
people only say this to avoid sounding like they're giving the perp any credit. Bundy was very careful in his first few murders, there was basically no physical evidence at all against him. They wouldn't have gotten a conviction.
>>
>>18577905
I don't buy this, copycats were overblown. Who can name a single Dahmer copycat who was a direct result of his press coverage? There aren't any noteworthy examples
>>
>>18579489
Not really, gang killings are very different from serial killers modus operandi. A drive by leaves a lot less evidence than breaking into someone's house and stabbing them to death.
