I think the Nazis probably did know that what they were doing was wrong, even if they tried to convince themselves and others that it was acceptable. It is hard to imagine someone genuinely believing that keeping people as slaves, taking away their rights, and trying to wipe out entire groups of people was a normal or moral thing to do.
