It’s much less stressful than, say, family law. Your clients are faced with losing their driving license or assrape prison, so they find the money to pay you. And they’re human scum, so if you lose, even if they are innocent of THAT crime, they still should probably be in prison.

A friend of mine was a defense attorney and his rationale was that even the lowest obviously guilty scumbag had a right to competent legal counsel and their day in court. I’m a “hang ‘em high” guy but he was very convincing. He said that financial fraud clients were the worse for getting paid and that bikers were the best, always right there with the cash for their brothers. He certainly wasn’t getting rich and eventually moved on to more lucrative work.

I would be upholding the greater principle that the state has to actually prove someone is guilty rather than just throwing people in jail without due process. Even though he’s obviously guilty, he has a right to contest it. He will inevitably be convicted if he’s obviously guilty, and there’s no guilt on my conscience. If he gets off, then it’s not the defense attorney’s fault but the prosecutor for fucking it up.
