What motivates someone to become a criminal defense attorney?
>>
>>18580274
conviction to the principle that everyone is innocent until proven guilty
belief that everyone deserve fair representation in a court of law
because they make a lot of money
>>
>>18580274
hybristophilia and/or FUCK YOU DAD syndrome
>>
Money.
>>
>>18580277
>Money
White collar defense yes, public defenders no
>>
>>18580274
You raped me. No defence attorney allowed for you so it's straight to the chair :)

Because you can fuck up subtly and allow your black client to be hanged but magically defend a Hwhite client and commute death to life.
>>
>>18580274
I don't understand what the OP is asking.
>>
It’s much less stressful than, say, family law. Your clients are faced with losing their driving license or assrape prison, so they find the money to pay you. And they’re human scum, so if you lose, even if they are innocent of THAT crime, they still should probably be in prison.

Very few people work as a public defender for more than the first few years of their career. It's basically like an internship for getting some professional experience before becoming a prosecutor, joining a private lawfirm, or going into politics.

probably
>>

I feel like highschool debatelords would be attracted to that profession

You can really tell who possesses the intellect of a First Worlder vs the the intellect of a Third Worlder based on their attitude to criminal justice.
Third worlders are literally too fucking stupid to ever understand principles such as "innocent until proven guilty", right to a fair trial and defense, why habeas corpus and warrants matter, prisoner rights etc... they literally can't connect the dots between abolishing these concepts and later falling victim to a tyrannical government or innocent people being wrongly convicted and punished brutally for things they didn't do.
Nowhere is this gap in human thinking more evident than when you compare a Dane or a Norwegian to a typical New Worlder yapping barbarian
>>
>>18580770
You're a midwit.
The OP meme is about reducing sentencing which is objectively just libtarded and foid brained.
Yes, people are innocent until proven guilty and yes as a lawyer you are obligated to try and prevent their conviction. However once convicted reducing sentencing is just libtard behavior and they are under no legal obligation to do so unless emotionally invested in giving criminals happy life.
>>
>>18580806
sometimes prosecutors are retards or not above petty behavior or vengefulness so that's why appeals exist
>>

>>18580798
Stupid fucking racists. You are literally begging for a dictator to destroy your nations and even kill you for some stupid esoteric idea of "defeating woke and communism yooo". Look at El Salvador, there are trans of thousands of men who were innocent and imprisoned. I don't mean the cartel tattooed retards, I mean even people with no tattoos that simply lived in poor neighborhoods because of poverty, they were arrested too. Some were arrested just for being brown, again, no tattoos or ties to cartels or gangs, just being ugly looking. That shit can happen to you under a dictator and no rule of law you stupid racist dumbfucks.
>>
>>18580808
what you find out in law is that prosecutors are only human and they have different crimes they care/feel strongly about and that affects what they will or won't prosecute or if they push for the maximum sentence or not.

I used to work with a Haitian guy who was constantly bitching about America and white people and had hilarious ideas about how the system worked, like he thought cops got a cut from any traffic tickets they wrote. When he got a jury summons he totally lost his shit “How you say this country free when they make you do this?” Our company paid us for any days on jury duty so it was like a semi-vacation, and you could always just throw the summons in the trash. He went and somehow got picked, and when he came back he was fucking glowing from the power rush of sending someone to jail, a black guy btw. Smart prosecutor, to sense his petty authoritarian nature, rather than the “blacks won’t convict blacks” obvious play.

>like he thought cops got a cut from any traffic tickets they wrote.
Do you really not know that cops engage in dirty money? Are you really that naive? They literally protect the rich above civilians.

see here. it goes way back. in the case mentioned here, it was back in the 1930s already that Ellis Islanders didn't understand American legal norms.
>>
>>18580821
it's 10x worse in any Third World country
>>
>>18580821
I’m totally ACAB but the idea that some meter maid is getting a piece of the action is ludicrous.
>>
>>18580770
idk what Third World cunts you mean exactly. Iran? but Latin American justice systems are insanely soft and there's no death penalty. murder someone and get out in 15 years.
>>
>>18580274

They're the worst of men. Sophists driver by avarice
>>
>>18580837
I'm going to put your balls in a vice until you scream that you planned to murder the president. Then you get the chair :)
>>
>>18580274
it’s money. they know they’re piece of shit sheisters judging by their alcoholism rates.

it’s a dirty job but I suppose somebody has to do it
>>
>>18580400
very few stay in the public defense game for a long time. it’s not even something reserved for second or third rate lawyers from shitty schools these days it’s a prestige position to pad your resume as your on the path to a super high paying gig
>>
>>18580840
Oh they're absolutely needed. Just the scum of the earth who would defend you if they knew you did that to me so they could get a nice new car.

They would rip into me on the stand until I was soiling myself from ptsd so they could pretend it was all a lie.
>>
>>18580810
>poor
>brown
They’re probably guilty of something. This is just a utilitarian conception of criminal law.
>>
A friend of mine was a defense attorney and his rationale was that even the lowest obviously guilty scumbag had a right to competent legal counsel and their day in court. I’m a “hang ‘em high” guy but he was very convincing. He said that financial fraud clients were the worse for getting paid and that bikers were the best, always right there with the cash for their brothers. He certainly wasn’t getting rich and eventually moved on to more lucrative work.

>A friend of mine was a defense attorney and his rationale was that even the lowest obviously guilty scumbag had a right to competent legal counsel and their day in court.
no matter how low you are, you still may be innocent of what you're accused of
>>
>>18580867
There's no problem with that. Of course, the issue arises when you know your client is clearly guilty, yet he wants to plead not guilty. Then you have to defend him while knowing he raped a child.

The ones with a conscience will ditch him as a client at this point, which means you just lost time and money. The majority, of course, don't have a conscience and are happy to lie and defend a scumbag criminal against his victims if it earns them cash. That's why people hate defense lawyers. I have no problem with someone defending someone if they seem innocent, or are admitting guilt. It's only the aforementioned - and very common - situation that these lawyers become scumbags.
>>
>>18580958
t. some guy who was raped as a kid and his rapist is now out on parole

that's between you and your therapist, though
>>
>>18580958
There are no qualms about that. If he is so obviously guilty, then the state will easily prove my client is guilty. I would be upholding the greater principle that the state has to actually prove someone is guilty rather than just throwing people in jail without due process. Even though he’s obviously guilty, he has a right to contest it. He will inevitably be convicted if he’s obviously guilty, and there’s no guilt on my conscience. If he gets off, then it’s not the defense attorney’s fault but the prosecutor for fucking it up.
>>
>>18580821
Every cop gets a cut?
>>
>>18580806
Seeking the lightest sentence possible is also part of the lawyer deal. The problem is this bitch gloating online and being politically against the death penalty.
>>
>>18581151
what bitch? where?
>>
>>18580274
You can defend freedom of speech which is nice
>>
>>18580274
As anon mentioned already, it's a dorty job overall but someone has to do it. The problem is sometimes they make it too personal which is laughable.
