I think most of the audience for crusader memes was ironically mexicans
But when people talk about the crusades, mostly they mean crusades I-III. All of the other ones might as well have been irrelevant side events (King Dumbfuckus II goes to the middle east with no allies and dies) or totally unrelated (Rome gets revenge on Byzantium because they slaughtered the Latin quarter and didn't pay debts). In fact I suspect a lot of these are grouped together to make the crusaders look worse in retrospect.

Actually the Massacres of the Latins received little attention at the time and Venetians who later sacked Constantinople actually benefited from the massacre.
