>>18583326I don't think it was chipped away as much as we didn't have much to start with. We were an agrarian backwater with no cities that would produce the intelligentsia that would produce a national identity, the centers of our intelligentsia as ever were Vilnius and Warsaw. The rest is basically a historical accident, a few people did get to Vilnius and after observing Lithuanians decided to try something of their own, and that gave us the BNR. Then it is basically the stories of various empires deciding that it was valuable for them to maintain a nice national entity on the frontier - first the short-lived German attempt, then the Poles and the Soviets both. Ultimately I would say the result is a very young nationalism, and not yet fully formed. To some extent you could say "innocent", one thing that we do have is that no one has that serious of a bone to pick with us, nor us with them - nothing even remotely comparable to e.g. the Volhynia issue between Poland and Ukraine, or the Holodomor between Russia and Ukraine. One feature of national identity it has produced, and I genuinely am aware that I carry it and maybe even like that I was raised in it - is the "mind your business" focus. We don't really get involved in things or hold positions on things unless it impacts us or our close ones, we don't try to fix the world's great problems, we just adapt or duck them. Some people say this is cowardice or weakness, and it is certainly not showy, but I think it's a pretty tranquil way to live.

It's a remnant of medieval Lithuania, a Russian nation which for centuries battled with Moscow over who got to rule Russia. Otherwise it's just a part of Russia with the same regional culture as any other part of Russia.
