I read a very interesting primary source account of life in Nazi Germany called "Education for Death: the Making of the Nazi" by Gregor Ziemer. He was the headmaster of the American school in Berlin, and when that closed in 1939 he obtained permission from the German minister of culture to extensively tour the country's education system. The book is basically his travel log of Germany's education system and social programs circa 1939.There's a lot in there about daily minutiae of culture and education that were quite fascinating and disturbingJust a few examples>spends a day with a social worker who travels to the homes of parents with young children. She interviews the kids to make sure they're being turned into good little nazis, one parent is threatened with having her children taken away when the kid says he doesn't want to be a soldier>the education system has been radically restructured, boys and girls are taught separately and its drilled into them that for boys the only acceptable path in life is to be a soldier, and for girls the only acceptable path is to be the mother of soldiers. Girls end school at 14.>talks at length about how unmarried women are being encouraged to get pregnant by random men so they can then give their children up to state orphanages.
