>>18586160Basically, the reign of Queen Ranavalona I of Madagascar was one of those reigns that described something similar to that of a Caligula. A lot of Madagascans died during her reign, a popular estimation is that roughly two to three million died when Madagascar had a population of around five million people. She largely persecuted Christiansin trials where you had to consume poison to prove your innocence, you were guaranteed basically a death no matter what the verdict turned out as.(though I have heard arguments that the real deathtoll are not actually from persecuting Christians , but more so the imperial conquests of the hegemonic state of Madagascar expanding and attempts to unify the island). That's probably why the native religion survived.
