Even if you were only 1/16 black with blonde hair, blue eyes and white skin, if people knew your lineage, you were still legally black. So mixed-race people tended to just keep mixing, while Whites stayed mostly pure. That's why like 30% of American "blacks" have European blood and look different from pure Africans, but most Whites have 0% African blood. There is unironically more native american DNA in southern Whites than African DNA.

Actual data shows us that yes, most Afrikaners do have non-white heritage, but it’s in small amounts and relatively evenly distributed. Khoi-San admixture, Bantu, and even some Southeast Asian because the Dutch brought in Malay workers or some shit I don’t remember. However, it makes up a very small amount of their overall ancestry. As for White Southerners, most do not have any non-white admixture. If they do, they usually have family knowledge of it. I almost wonder if Native heritage can be found in higher numbers than Black ancestry. That being said, it seems more common for White Southerners to claim some Native and/or black heritage and not actually have it, than to claim to be fully white and actually have native heritage. There have been stories of people tracing their lineage and doing DNA tests and finding out about previously unknown black and/or native ancestors, but it’s not every few people or anything. For example, I’m from the North, but much of my Scottish ancestry originally comes from North Carolina before they migrated through the Appalachian mountains and ended up in the Midwest. Anyway, we were under the false impression of Native ancestry because a 2 or 3 times great grandfather had married a native woman and produced children with her. It turns out it was mixed up in the genealogical record, because the native woman was actually his second wife after his first wife, a white woman, had passed away. We actually descend from the children he produced with his first wife, again, who was white, as opposed to the second wife, a native american woman.

No, miscegenation laws in the US made it clear that if you were mixed race you weren't considered white at all, so you'd have to marry into the black population or with other mulattos. To this day white Americans tend to be almost exclusively 100% European ancestry. I think the number was something like 98% of white Americans have no DNA from anywhere but Europe. One drop rule is still basically in effect despite decades of Jewish propaganda encouraging race mixing.

Detroit writer Charlie LeDuff is another example who found out later in life about his family history. Many light skinned Creoles moved north and were able to pass.
