After that monarch died there was a succession crisis where one of the contenders had jewish help and used these contacts to bring in arabs as sort of mercenaries but said mercenaries just said fuck it we conquer. The towns across the peninsula were segregated and so were their defences and jewish quarters just opened the gates when siege started so there wasn't anything to stop the arabs until the visigoths could regroup.
