>>18586712Dharma is equivalent to the idea of natural law. People, animals and objects have a role they must follow due to their nature. Not following those roles leads to karmic consequences. The problem with devotional religions is that they act like if you worship a persona you can negate karma. The Vaishnava traditions are famous for believing that bhakti can outweigh karmic consequences. Which is wrong. Every action has a reaction and you must pay every debt. Not believing so is fundamentally Asuric and what makes it crypto-Christian. You must understand that following the proscribed rituals and engaging in Puṇyic ethical actions is what matters.

Hinduism is deeply tied to the physical and moral geography of the subcontinent. I would then read the Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda before moving onto the Upanishads. His work is much more recent, easily accessible in English, and does a solid job of explaining a modern Hindu approach to all these ancient texts.
