Like others have said, it's not the "ch" sound. However, there is an actually valid critique of the romanization of mandarin, and that's the usage of "zh" for the "j" sound. That one is actually identical, and whoever thought it should be "zh" is fucking retarded.
Pinyin is easier to read but being really, Wades-Giles preserve sound differences in Chinese better for English speakers if you know that the apostrophe signifies aspiration (t is unaspirated, pronounced t in "stop" vs aspirated t' as in top)

Its words are almost exclusively monosyllabic. The difference is used a lot of consonant clusters and final consonants which got dropped over time which led to develoopment phonemic tones.
