I am tired of this myth being perpetuated that Huns were basically ethnic Mongols. They were not! They were probably the descendants of an Eastern Germanic strain, which moved further and further east, adopted some of the "badass" steppe culture, because the steppe is a very harsh place, where only the most ruthless and mighty people survive. Just look at how the Rus Vikings behaved completely differently, when they were in Eastern Europe, compared to Scandinavia.
The Huns spoke Gothic. It was the lingua Franka of their Empire. They regarded Germanics as their ethnic brethrens. They sent Hunnic maidens without bodyguards all over Germania to seek husbands, who would then be allies of the Hunnic Empire. So from their perspective they saw the other Germanics as a kindred people, but the other Germanics of course didn't really recognize the Huns as their own, since they looked like terrifying and ugly Demons (head-binding practice).

The relationship between the Huns and Germans was similar to the Medes and Persians. The Persians called them "a horde from who knows where", but the Medes surprisingly spoke a similar language, which was mutually intelligible, so it's kinda strange the Persians supposedly didn't recognize them or already forgotten them.

I mean I'm not convinced they're Xiongnu, but there wasn't much stopping them from just riding on horses until they got to Europe. Tocharians have been found in Western China and predate the Hun expansion. It's possible there was some intermarriage before they even started heading towards Europe.
That said, IDK why the other Germs wouldn't just recognize them as kin. Why would there be any confusion about this just because they fired bows from horseback. We can recognize the Scythians and Thracians were the same people even though one rode horses and the other didn't as much.

Because they literally looked like Demons/Aliens, because of that retarded infant head-binding practice and adopted many different cultural practices and loan words from the other steppe people.
