Were the Muisca on the path to developing the first South American writing system when the Europeans arrived?
There's a nearly 2000 year gap between the VinĨa symbols and Linear A. I think if the European conquest of the Americas had never happened, the Mesoamericans would probably be inventing some of their first syllabaries right now, and South America might still be in the proto-writing stage.
