I’ve been mulling something around in my head lately that I call the ‘Parable of Pennsylvania’ to myself. Long before the arrival of English settlers, the land that now comprises the state of Pennsylvania was home to many different tribes of Indians. Two of the most powerful tribes in the area were the Delaware and the Eerie, their influence being strong enough that their names are still synonymous with important geographical features today. For a very long time the Delaware ruled the east and the Eerie ruled the west. The White man’s tech and diseases spread more quickly than his actual settlements, so that no matter where they were, these dominant tribes were forced to deal not only with new pathogens and weapons, but also with new ideas and new people. In the east the Lenape Delaware found themselves struggling against the White English settlers. Whereas in the west the Eerie found themselves out-politicked and outnumbered by the new powerhouse on the block, the Iroquois Confederation. The Delaware and the rest of the Lenape’s close proximity to English settlementation turned out to be less of a curse than one may have expected. They were one of the first tribes to sign a treaty with the USA and although they were removed from their lands and placed on reservations out west, they still exist today as a living tribe with a continuous unbroken chain of history and culture reaching back into the fog of mythos.

In order to soothe their wounded pride they proposed that an Olympic Games like event be held in which the finest athletes and warriors should be picked from amongst each of the tribes of the Haudenosaunee and sent to the Eerie village to compete against their finest.According to the Iroquois they were badgered and insulted into this contest against their better judgement. They finally accepted after at least one polite refusal, and sent 100 young braves off to play them in a game of stickball, which the Haudenosaunee won. Having won the game (and a pile of treasure that was the wager) the Haudenosaunee prepared to depart the next morning. Instead the Eerie challenged them to a foot race the next day in order to salvage their wounded pride. The Haudenosaunee won that as well.

So, even though they just let 100 young warriors return home with gold and jewelry instead of just killing them and starting the war right then and there, they had a if meeting and announced they would prepare to sneak attack the Seneca and thus declare war on the entire Haudenosaunee. Fortunately for the Iroquois there was a Seneca woman who lived with the Eerie and she escaped and warned them. The Haudenosaunee sent a war party of thousands and met an Eerie war party at the foot of Canandaigua lake, on the Genesee river. It was a brutally hot day and a long, bloody, and desperate battle ultimately ended in victory for the Haudenosaunee. Most of the defeated Eerie so survived chose to stay on the field and die by tomahawk then retreat. The ones who fled back to the village and escaped were eventually caught up with at an Indian mission and slaughtered to a man. Their bones left to bleach in the sun.
