Not inherently, but the assumption that they were lying or exaggerating everything is an argument that gets weaker with every discovery in Homer's favor. Especially when you view stories like that in a global context, nearly every culture understood there to be an age where divine beings walked amongst humans, mated with humans to produce giants, and horrific creatures roamed the earth. Ancient people treated these myths as real history, and there's a a decent chance that it's because they were real history.If you got into a time machine and went back to the age of heroes, you probably wouldn't find some minor Greek-Anatolian conflict that kinda sorta inspired the stories, you'd find the stories. You'd see Troy, you'd see Achilles, you'd see Athena.

Even their patron god was a deity called Āppaliunāš whom many scholars believe to be an early form of Apollo (who was the patron god of Troy in the Iliad). The Ancient Greeks believed the Trojan War happened in the 12th century BC (Eratosthenes specifically dated the Sack of Troy at the end of the war to have happened on June 11, 1184 BC) and roughly around this time period, Wiluša was destroyed in a series of sieges that correspond with the wider Bronze Age collapse in which several city-states, kingdoms, and empires across the Eastern Mediterranean were destroyed by the Sea Peoples. Many scholars believe that these Sea Peoples were of mostly Greek origin given that they were depicted in Egyptian reliefs with armor used by the Mycenaean Greeks and the names of various Sea People tribes listed also correspond with names Homer later used to refer to the Greeks like Achaean and Danaan. The term Achaean is also attested in Hittite records as Ahhiyawa which was used as the Hittite name for mainland Greece and interestingly these records also mention a Greek warlord named Attarsiya whom many scholars believe is the historical basis for Atreus.
