...why? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Because you're too smart.

Lower your IQ to 70 or even less, and you won't mind talking to a chatbot.
>>
I saw a guy post once about how he was too lazy to get up to chat gpt something then realized he could just “ask the ai in his brain” and it answered back like a llm model would. Normies are being over killed by ai so hard the bicameral mind is making a resurgence but this time it’s computers instead of the anunaki

People have always had relationships with their tools. Woman love their clothes, and men love their cars. It's just an extention of our agency.

My computer acts like its machine spirit is angry sometimes but I don’t think it’s sapient the way people think ai is. Hell, it might be more likely that esoteric energy gave my pc an animist spirit than us having made AGI with our current tech.

Extreme loneliness coupled with extreme desperation coupled with extreme stupidity.

People also talk to their house plants. Going back to the OP though, A.i. is a conversational tool. Getting mad at people for talking to AI. Is like getting mad at someone for turning a screw driver. That's how the tool works. Yes, E-Bikes make people weaker, because they dont need to peddle. Do we all need strong calves? If you want strong leg muscles, ride an old school bike. If you want to get someplace and not be all sweaty, use an E-Bike. You can still exercise your mind, and still use A.I. you can still use an elevator, and then go to the gym and climb the stair master when you want to strengthen your muscles.

Maybe I just have too much faith in humanity but I can't imagine these people are being completely serious, maybe somewhat serious, but surely they know at the back of their minds that AI isn't actually anymore intelligent than a calculator right?

Because the longer they "converse" with a chatbot, the better their own values and thinking are representing in the context, the more it biases the chatbot towards talking like their own reflection. If you're a philosophically disinclined dunce, and your mind is adequately represented in these models of human mediocrity, talking to ShatGPT probably feels like talking to a soulmate and you'll never stop to question the nature of what you're doing.

unfortunately, most are way, way too dumb to utilize a tool like AI with anything resembling the level of competency required to justify their access

Being attached to some item you own is normal. Treating it like a person is insane.

You can add to this the fact that most normies are now charmless and socially incompetent egocentrics who can't relate to other people, nor express themselves in a way relatable to others. For them, watching the machine spitball their own verbal output is the closest thing to the experience of talking to someone who just "gets" you.

You and op are talking about two different groups of people. You’re talking about a relatively intelligent person that chooses to use ai sometimes and op is talking about mouth breathing retards that think it’s alive.
>>

People who think their house plant is their girlfriend and kill themselves because the plant told them to are generally considered to be off their fucking rockers.

No one is getting mad at people for "talking to AI".
