The concept of "the narcissism of small differences" is a misnomer. It was incautiously and irresponsibly named. We know today that the primary driver of conflict between groups that are 99% identical is threat perception, not vanity. That 1% difference carries 100% of the burden of distinct identity, creating a threat of assimilation. But Freud prioritized his existing psychoanalytic framework over the actual mechanics of group conflict, leaving us with a catchphrase that minimizes identity defense as vanity, and has done real intellectual damage.
