We're now on Day #20 of my daily US states threads in honor of the 250th anniversary of the country.Maryland joined as the 7th state on 4/28/1788. It is named after Queen Henrietta Maria of France, though the original proposed name by Lord Baltimore was Crescentia. Its capital is Annapolis and its largest city is Baltimore. It has a population of 6.3 Million and is 12.4k square miles in size. Maryland was originally founded by Lord Baltimore in 1634, intended to be a haven for Roman Catholics escaping persecution. Nevertheless, they still were only a minority in Maryland. The 1640/50's were known as the Plundering Time owing to Puritan misrule and violence against other Christian denominations. Maryland banned Catholicism in 1688, which would last until the revolution.Maryland freed their slaves before the 19th century. Future abolitionists Tubman and Douglass would be born here. The famous Battle of Antietam was fought in 1862 on Union soil, and is widely considered a turning point in the war.Owing to its sea and rail connections, Baltimore grew significantly after the war. Although black populations were well established and better off than in other states, segregation and Jim Crow were still prevalent. Throughout the 20th century, Maryland became steadily more progressive. Urban renewal project in the 1960's have resulted in social volatility, and the Maryland economy continues to grow and expand to this day. What do you think of The Old Line State?

>>18603001I was born and live here. I've traveled through much of the state and enjoy seeing its many historic areas. This description is pretty accurate - we have probably the richest Catholic heritage out of the 13 colonies and there are still seemingly some of the old English Catholic families with a lot of money here. We did start manumitting our slaves early and there were a lot of free blacks by the 1850s but slavery wasn't banned until the 1864 constitution. The bit about the postwar era is accurate. The population kinda exploded during the Cold War because of federal workers, contractors, the military, and high tech industries like medicine and biotech. Doesn't stop the hunting and gun culture in the less populated places though.
