We're now on Day #23 of my daily US states threads in honor of the 250th anniversary of the country.Minnesota joined as the 32nd state on 5/11/1858. Its named is derived from a Dakota word, either mni sota (clear blue water) or mnissota (cloudy water). Its capital is St. Paul and its largest city is Minneapolis. It has a population 5.8 Million and is 86.9k square miles in size. The Dakota and Ojibwe were the primary powers in the region before Europeans. European meddling resulted in the Dakota-Ojibwe War, destabilizing the region and leaving it open to colonization. In 1805, Zebulon Pike bargained with the natives to construct a military outpost in the state. Ft. Snelling was finished in 1825.Fierce battles were fought against the natives for control of Minnesota, to the point scalp bounties were put out on natives. The worst of this was the Dakota War of 1862, which culminated in the Mankato Mass Execution. The CCC would later assist in giving natives more agency and independence in the state in the 1930's. Logging, farming, and railroads were the backbone of the state's early economy. Iron would also become important by the Gilded Age. Early immigrants were often Europeans from places which had experienced failed revolutions, and as a result a strong social/labor activism element became core to the state's growth. The state has remained consistently liberal for the most part. In recent years, immigration has shifted away from Europe, and the state has a large population of Somali and Hmong. Minnesota has more lakes than any other state. Its climate differs from southern plains to northern colder forests. It borders Lake Superior in the northeast. Much of its ecology is similar to Canada, which combined with the aforementioned liberalism has led to jokes about Minnesota being Canada's lost cousin. What do you think of The Land of 10'000 Lakes?
