Why do so-called Christians gloat so much at the thought of their fellow men going to Hell? I don't think rejoicing in the damnation of others is very pious.

Calvinists have the most Biblically accurate take on salvation as outlined in Ephesians.

Ephesians 2:8-9
>For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

If faith is a "gift of God" that means whether or not you're saved or damn is entirely deterministic - especially if being a good person / doing good things has nothing to do with it.

I agree that there is an ongoing discussion in scripture about faith vs. works. To me providence means that God has made Himself accessible and if you genuinely seek Him, you will find and walk with Him. It doesn't mean anyone who He has revealed Himself to, apostles included, have perfect knowledge transmitted into their heads or that they're plugged in to an inerrant hive mind and can only repeat what others have layed out. God dwells in His saints through the Holy Spirit but they're still going to be humans using their brains to form associative patterns and sinning all along the way.

The discussion between Paul and James/Peter mirrors the "contradictions" that Christ present. And there are a lot of seeming contradictions in the narrative of Christ's life. He came to fulfill the law, not abolish it. Yet he objectively breaks the law on the regular. He says that all who seek Him are saved, but He also says that a tree that bears no good fruit will be cut down and cast into the fire. Naturally people will tend towards one extreme or the other, becoming either the elder brother or the prodigal son. But the point of Luke 15 is that both approaches are sinful distractions. Both legalism and licentious attitudes are wrong. Paul and James are arguing from either angle, but both maintain the same caveats. Faith is what saves. Even James says this. But true faith does not come with disregard of the law. Even Paul says this. I know it seems like reconciling and unifying two seemingly opposed stances seems like the natural thing for a Christian to do because they have an invested interest to insist they're not knowingly sinning. But as you read scripture you should ask yourself if what you're reading is a contradiction or multiple facets of the same gem. Can it be reconciled, or are the two things impossibly incompatible?

Another thing I love about Christians:
>present them a Bible verse that points out their mistake
>they brush it off like it's some minutia a random guy came up with unrelated to their faith
You don't even reverence the Bible, what even is the point of being religious if you treat your Holy Scriptures like wet paper?
"Uhh not my enemies"
"Nuh-uh, those verses about wealth being antithesis to a life in Christ are wrong"
"Giving to the poor? Loving your enemies? Fuck off, commie!"

Andersons official explanation to this verse is

Because it is written and redacted by man, but whatever inspired the various authors led them to chronicling sets of the most profound and useful approaches for life's most difficult and complicated issues.
>love your enemies
>forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who have trespassed against us
>forgive them, for they know not what they do
Seeing the world through this lens solves and prevents so much voluntary suffering. It makes your life so much more happy, peaceful, and enjoyable. We take the message for granted today because Christianity has dominated the world and become its largest religion. That and there are a lot of Christians who fail to learn and apply scripture. But for those struggling Christians and secular minds alike, we still see that the simple message of love over vengeance is one that is nearly impossible to derive naturally by our own intuition.
God has made sure that He is made accessible by putting all the simple, but not easy, answers one needs for their life in one place.

>>
>>18614966
>All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
>That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJV. Care to admit you are wrong, or are you going to double down?
>>
>>18614994
You can see the information I provided about that verse yesterday here >>18613854
tl;dr: "God-breathed" is not the same as "inspired".
It wasn't until hundreds of years after Paul was writing to Timothy that anyone (Origen) had suggested the imagery of the phrase could be used to denote inspiration. Naturally the tradition stuck because how do you keep those dirty Gnostics from bringing their copies of the Gospel of Thomas and Mary and Judas to church? You draw hard, arbitrary lines as to where "scripture" begins and ends and find some verse you can reinterpret and contort the meaning of to say "hey, I didn't make this rule. God did."

Something else pertaining to that verse that I didn't have the characters to finish explaining in the post is that the word "scripture" is glazed over by most Christians and no one stops to think about what it would have meant to Paul. Like other Jews who spoke the common Greek, Paul was likely pulling from the Jewish literature translated from Hebrew to Greek. This would have included the Septuigant, but also supplementary texts like the book of Isaiah (which, though it was missing from the Septuigant, made its way into the Christian canon) and the books of Maccabees (which didn't make it into the canon). We know this because he cites quotes that are unique to these translations. Notably absent in anything Paul quotes are the Gospels. Synoptic or the Gospel of John. These writings probably weren't compiled at the time of Paul's writing. He wouldn't have been considering those part of scripture and he wouldn't have been considering his own letters as part of scripture.

But there's one more thing that makes the verse you provided invalid for the discussion. The suggested translation says "inspired", not written. In my first post here, which you refuted, I acknowledged that the authors had some sort of inspiration. At best, God can be said to have inspired the authors. He did not "write" the Bible.
>>
>>18615266
>tl;dr: "God-breathed" is not the same as "inspired".
Great! "God-breathed" is not phrasing used in the cited passage. Try again?
>blah blah blah the septuigant blah blah blah I hate Jesus
Great! No one cares.
>But there's one more thing that makes the verse you provided invalid for the discussion. The suggested translation says "inspired", not written.
Great, let's compare that claim with another verse:
> Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
> For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
2 Peter 1:20-21
It would appear that inspiration, then, means that the Holy Ghost, ie God, moves men of God to write the scripture in light of this verse. Your braindead response?
>>
>>18612576
>>18612587
"Christian" is not a synonym for "universally, unconditionally sympathetic"
>>
>>18615276
>"God-breathed" is not phrasing used in the cited passage.
It is, just not in that specific translation. If you want to be technical, English words don't appear at all in scripture. Because scripture was written by non-English speaking authors.
>It would appear that inspiration, then, means that the Holy Ghost, ie God, moves men of God to write the scripture in light of this verse.
I'm not and never was against the idea of God as a primary cause. God is the reason anything happens at all. He wrote the Bible as much as He wrote all of existing literature. Or, at the very least, if you maintain that His direct inspiration exists only for His followers then He wrote the Bible as much as He wrote anything a Christian with sincere faith has written. Which means God is writing both of our retarded responses to each other.

Now stepping back from the semantics, you're smart enough to know the assumption for anyone entertaining a conversation that presumes the existence of an omnipotent, omnipresent God is not, by default, talking about universal primary causes. The colloquial default is to talk about secondary causes. God did not pen the books of scripture. He did not adopt the monikers of Paul, James, John, or any other author of scripture that self-identifies their works under authorship. He is the reason those men exist, yeah. He is the reason those men have brains and eyes and hands and that they use said brains and eyes and hands to take up and write. But if you're stepping up to "erm ackshually" a post that already explicitly alluded to primary causes, you're just showcasing that you wanted to feel included in the conversation but had nothing of substance to contribute.
>>
>>18615415
>It is, just not in that specific translation.
I don't care about other translations.

>>
>>18612576
Resentment of the small man
>>
>>18615428
>I've given you two clear passages. Why are those not good enough for you?
Because the only thing they made clear is that you have to construct yourself an Olympian-sized mental gymnasium and stick a leap larger than the Mariana Trench to conclude that the passages suggest scripture is penned with God's own hand.
>I don't care about other translations.
You don't care about the KJV either. You care about the text matching your parroted interpretations rather than letting it speak for itself. Stop trying to make God in your image. If you have a sincere faith you know how serious such an offense is.
