The Argentinians frequently bred with the natives, which is why they have a lot of Amerindian admixture today, where as the American settlers almost never did.

in a similar way, it started as a way to pacify unruly tribes and making treaties with the friendly ones. Argentina spent most of its early history as a confederation of provinces with a lot of internal problems so territorial expansion wasn't a priority.
The exception seems was the province of Buenos Aires. Juan Manuel de Rosas, governor of Buenos Aires and appointed dictator of the Confederation frequently campaigned against the "indios" to gain political prestige, like Caesar did in Gaul. That allowed him to gain support for an additional term as governor. So Buenos Aires was actually gaining territory slowly to the south.

After Rosas was overthrown and the Paraguayan war ended, Argentine was reformed into a Republic, that period is usually called "the liberal conservative regime". Argentine was modernized in education, communications, the army, and the country shifted towards an agrarian economy of exportation, so the country needed more land, so the south (the desert) was conquered. It wasn't a desert in the literal sense, it was called like that because it wasn't inhabitated by people that "mattered".
Now there was a clear difference between how the indian lands were settled compared with the US, the US did it with families, small landowners. The oligarchic regime did it through powerful cattle landowners which were part of the rulling oligarchy, populating the south with inmigrants wasn't a priority

Jose Gaspar de Francia, their first president/dictator, banned whites from marrying whites. He was white himself but didn't want an ethnic hierarchy with the Spanish on top and solved the problem with mandatory interracial breeding grounds.
But there have been immigrants since then, hence the 5/17%
