America briefly occupied Mexico City in 1847, just 22 years before the transcontinental railroad and the birth of modern America. Why didn't they take the opportunity to absolutely curbstomp Mexijeets and turn the landmass into a permanent puppet state? It may have prevented the civil war since it would be a prelude to the Golden Circle the southern states always wanted to build in the Gulf of Mexico. The South could create new states in Mexico and on Caribbean islands thereby maintaining the balance of free/slave states, until the 1880s or so when slavery dissolves on their own terms. It would have also prevented French interference in Mexico and that weird thing with "Emperor" Maximilian. Was it because the US, having been a colony itself, was afraid of becoming imperialist? It was wrong in the case of the British to treat fellow aryans like colonial subjects without representation in parliament, but surely it is totally morally justified with low IQ brown people. It is not as though the new states would give notwhites the vote without the 14th amendment.
The problem with Mexico is its full of Mexicans.
>make the US hispanic majority two centuries earlybueno idea ese
>>18615010>Why didn't they take the opportunity to absolutely curbstomp Mexijeets and turn the landmass into a permanent puppet state? They didnt want to annex more land because they didnt want to add millions of what they considered racially inferior people to the united states
They already had major a political crisis trying to integrate and settle what they annexed in IRL
>>18615010Because that’s too much effort + America was still ideologically isolationist in the sense that it didn’t want to entangle itself in empire building abroad. That changed in coming decades
>>18615010Because trying to maintain control of Mexico would be a nightmare and probably would be met with decades of guerilla warfare at the very least.Believe it or not occupying foreign territory is very expensive.
Jamboy thread
>>18615168Yes, Indian were raped on 1857.
It's because you don't actually want Mexico or any of their subjects, but you do want the territories they nominally control west of the Rockies.
We should have annexed the entire thing and simply shot any trouble makers. We fucked up
>>18615634Nah, northern Mexico get annexed, and the remaining territories were balkanized in a manner similar to Central American countries.

>>18617040The Philippines, most pacific islands, also you don’t have Puerto Rico filled in which we already have.
The entire North had been against the war from the beginning, seeing it (correctly) as being an attempt to expand slavery and the power of the Planter Class. While they weren't able to stop the war, they were able to lessen the amount of new slave territory added. Now of course this whole dichotomy ceases to be an issue in only a decade when the Civil War abolishes slavery anyway, making the issue of Slave States vs Free States moot, but no one at the time could have known that.
>>18617162Why wasnt the US able to fully integrate Puerto Rico as a State, but did it with Hawaii?
>>18615010>It may have prevented the civil war since it would be a prelude to the Golden Circle the southern states always wanted to build in the Gulf of Mexico. Mexijeets can’t fight, they’re too lazy for soldiering
>>18615010Armchair imperialism. My favourite kind of imperialism. Yeah we just have to uhh spend an inordinate amount of resources controling a place we don't care about and no one wants to settle in because ???. Yeah bro, they should have totally done that.
>>18618328They struggled to give New Mexico statehood and you expect the annexation of Mexico to do anything other than inducing mass suicides.
>>18618340But they were very close to admit Yucatan as a statehood. And New Mexico didn't get statehood because almost no one lived plus the whole slavery issue of the border states that no one wanted to address. Besides New Mexico seems to be cursed in the sense that every time politicians talked about the issue, some other bigger issue took the spotlight out of it.
>>18618255>>18617162Well return it back to Spain because the Yankees wanted Panama, Venezuela, Canada, and Greenland.
>>18615013The south is full of black people, but that wasn't a problem until 1865.
>>18615634>>18615657>>18615746They could have been colonized the way India was colonized. Mexico would be governed benevolently to the benefit of both white and brown.Princely states like Hyderabad had no national ambitions, similar to groups like the Maya of the Yucatan, they only cared about their particular region and its memes. Similarly native chiefs would accept vassalage knowing the Americans could easily install their rival, they may even provide "Sepoys" knowing they are an important bargaining chip to secure their personal position. They would see it as opportunity not oppression, each "Sepoy" would be paid enough to make him the talk of his little village in the jungle.Regions like Zacatecas with dense populations were not fertile grounds for rebellion, although the population would dislike not having the same rights and wealth as gringos, they didn't have many rights or much wealth under Mexico either.Sparsely populated desert regions to the north would be swarmed with Anglo settlers like Texas, attracted by whatever resources become valuable as the industrial revolution progresses with railroads direct to Houston and California, they would be no different from Nevada or New Mexico. This may not be enough to maintain the balance of slave/free states, but new states can be formed as long as there is at least 10k adult white men of good character who can be voting citizens, as per the constitution (Montana had less than 40k people when it was admitted).
>>18618648Desu the US government would probably just kick a few million Maya over the border into Guatemala. There’s no reason to think they’d be treated any better then the Cherokee or Apache were at the same time. Mexico would be white today. White libtards would cry about it but without their pet browns there wouldn’t be enough of them for anyone to care.
>>18618803>da libtardzAmerica was founded by liberals you retarded tranny.
The serious answer is that by the time US forces reached Mexico City, the war effort was quickly losing popularity. Americans weren't used to reading about their soldiers committing war crimes on another sovereign nation's soil, and weren't used to reading about them dying even in small numbers for wars that were not waged out of survival. It was pretty much an open secret by that point that he had deliberately provoked the Mexicans by plopping an army on their side of the disputed border, inviting an attack. The Whigs retook Congress during the midterms, and increasingly denounced the war as an unjust land grab for the benefit of slave owners. Meanwhile, a lot of said slave owners balked at the idea of having so many free nonwhites enter the population. Seeing the writing on the wall but still wanting places like Baja California and what is now Northern Mexico, president polk sent a diplomat to negotiate Mexico's surrender and ceding of territory, but the diplomat secretly hated the war too and negotiated the bare minimum land grab that his instructions allowed for. Polk was furious and tried to fire him, but the diplomat refused to leave and instead sent the treaty back. By this point, public opinion had so turned against the war that Polk felt he had no choice but to sign off on it and present it to Congress for ratification.

>>18618848>president polk sent a diplomat to negotiate Mexico's surrender and ceding of territory, but the diplomat secretly hated the war too and negotiated the bare minimum land grab that his instructions allowed forThis is the crux of the matter. Polk wanted at least Baja from the deal, thing that Nicholas Trist didn't even want to negotiate. Any other diplomat would have gotten the original cession plus baja plus the current mexican northern states, if not a bit more.Mexico was in no position of argue otherwise, but Trist being against the war was the thing that stopped the US to eat even more of what it was Mexico, at that point.
>>18618925Trist was such a good guy. We need statues of him.
>>18615010>It may have prevented the civil warThe Civil War was going to happen for the simple fact of the "free vs slave states" becoming some kind of internal competition and any time some of the sides got the advantage, the other side did eveything in its power to get another "piece of land" to counter it.And wherever you expand, you would end with a lack of land at some point, and that exact point is when things goes to shit. That's why we ended with the shitshow that was "Bleeding Kansas" which ultimately devolved into the Civil War.
>>18615010Some saw it as an imperialist misadventure that betrayed the ideals of the nation. Others did not want to give citizenship to millions of Mexicans. And for the rest, the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze. The US already got the best parts, and has kept Mexico largely supplicant ever since.
>>18618255its pretty much a case of the GOP not wanting to add another state that would likely vote Dem and thus make future elections harder for them, and Dems not wanting to make it a state because then they would have to devout far more money into it since states have better access to funds
>>18618987This gen of Democrats definitely would like to make Puerto Rico and even DC as states. The problem is they still had not have a supermajority yet.
