>>18615104honestly i see it as a post-civil rights act thing. idk but when you talk to older blacks the 70s and 80s just seemed like a very evil time, almost like a kind of seismic shift to the negative. urban decay, the crack epidemic, an implosion of single fathers and crack babies. i'm not going to act like american history was always kind to them but man that time just seems like the beginning of a decline they haven't gotten out of. and yeah a lot of this is at the very least sponsored or encouraged by the state, the war on drugs thing is a tired point and there's some more sinister shit out there. like how rap noticeably got a lot more antisocial and violent in the 90s. i once taught at this high school in an inner city region (one of the poorest in my state) and the amount of fast food chains/sugary foods sold in the gas station i went to was outstanding. like that scared the shit out of me--how these toxic foods were disproportionately being sold in these areas. like yeah i know it's obvious but damn was it jarring. i see the 70s and 80s as starting what i saw in the present.i wonder if black americans hit their peak in the progressive era, where the reforms given to them basically kept them segregated but upped their living conditions considerably. that'll probably get me shouted out in a college classroom but man the harlem renaissance and booker t washington seems better than what they have now. even the kkk in the teens and 20s targeted catholics more than anyone. sad stuff
