When secular humanists talk about "humanity" and appeals to "humanity", what are they talking about exactly? Are they saying that "having humanity" is inherently good and "inhumanity" is inherently bad? What makes humans inherently good compared to other animals?
>>18615904They mean the collective human species, shared human experiences, and our innate capacity for reason, empathy, and moral responsibility without divine guidance. From a secular humanist perspective, humans are not considered "inherently good" in a magical or absolute way compared to other animals. Instead, humanists view morality as a natural product of evolution, science, and social living.
>>18615904Humans evolved to have morality and care for higher things as a result of our larger brains
>>18615914>moral responsibility without divine guidanceImpossible. We do in fact need God to tell us to be good, and especially tell us to not be evil.
>>18615904>What makes humans inherently good compared to other animals? They believe humans possess a metaphysical property called "human rights", which is a religious concept derived from the Christian concept that all humans are created in God's image
>>18615904This -> >>18615933They are people who are religious at heart but are resentful towards God. They can't handle true atheism and the egopill.

>>18615914>Without divine guidance Your rationality and conscience is divine guidance you imbecile
>>18616220>muh race Spook
>>18616223Is this just one of those things where you guys go ‘god did it’ with respect to an easily explained natural phenomenon in order to wedge god into physical reality? I’ll never understand why people who claim to rely on faith demand so much proof and involvement from the subject of their worship.
>>18616627>Easily explainedOk come up with a falsifiable scientific model of consciousness that gives a detailed description of how it and human rationality, language and conscience worksHard mode: you can't use vague language like emergence and evolution;I want a precise description of the exact mechanisms and how they casually interact
>>18616634>human rationality, language and conscience We've programmed computers to do all of this so unless God has given computers divine guidance I think it's safe to say these all have physical explanations even though I can't personally describe the process.
>>18616703>We have programmed computers with our minds to do everything our minds doOk now do it without a mind
>>18616703We have not programmed computers to do "all of this" because "all of this" is still not defined. But we can already say computers don't have "all of this" even according to nebulous definitions we have now. If I stab you with a needle, you will feel pain and move; if I program a robot to move in response to a sensor being subjected to pressure in the same way, it will move, but it will not feel pain or really anything; you just mistake complexity arising from quantity, with quality. Gears move because laws of physics compel them to move, not because they have qualia, same for AI. "but wut if AI has qualia" it does not, it's reducible to cogs; humans are not reducible to cogs because we do not understand how qualia is produced.>>18615914That does not answer the question. How does one appeal to "collective human species, shared human experiences, and our innate capacity for reason, empathy, and moral responsibility" as "good" if humans are not considered "inherently good"?

>>18618553You're just jumping to conclusions about the hard problem of consciousness which I've no interest in. All of the things that are actually observable are expressed by AI so they can obviously be described physically.
>>18618585>I have no response to the hard problem so I have no interest in itYou have nothing important to say then
>>18618645You already conceded that you don't know how qualia is produced. It's an irrelevant point until you can you verify qualia empirically.
>>18615914>>18615904The problem with secular humanism is that it has no antidote to the evils caused by human gratification. If everything exists purely for humanity's use, then this encourages greed, lust, and abuse of others & the environment. Transcendent worldviews that acknowledge the existence of higher morality outside of humanity is a necessity to curb the worst of human impulses.
>>18615904They mean Christian morality but are too raped by daddy being a mean Bible man and culcha wah tribal shit to admit that. The ones who do begrudgingly admit it will swear they’re only down the the big J and the gospels, and not that naughty little chud Paul, yet they agree with Paul on nearly everything but gender and sexuality.
