The deal with abrahamic religions is that they magnify commitment, rewards and losses.

Why do they magnify commitment? you have to attend church every sunday and have a set of prohibitions that are arbitrary

Why do they magnify rewards? given the peace of mind they provide believers they help people lower their cortisol. Believers have a higher life expectancy

Why do they magnify losses? they can be more disastrous, having lead to war, have people kill others, because of their religion,

So ''spiritual but not religious'' is easier to defend, it retains some of the emotional relief provided by religion, but not all. Atheism provides none of the relief, but it provides the freedom from religious ritual (if you find it burdensome) and the ability to engage with the supreme human value (reason) without having to teach your children stuff they will be able to deconstruct and without lobotomizing yourself to feel good about life.
